So I started this weekend and with about 8 hours in I am almost done the layout on ONE of the stupid things but getting faster.
You can see right now the picture is a little blurry but when I am done I am going to polish them so the image will show better.

SOOOOOOO to speed up the process i picked up a 30 LPI checkering file and gave it a go. Worked great had the other grip completely checkered in about 4 hours.
WARNING DO NOT TRY TO POLISH CHECKERED PLASTIC GRIPS WITH A DREMEL SET ON THE LOWEST SPEED WITH A COTTON WHEEL AND POLISHING COMPOUND.
The checkering WAS nice and pointy but as soon is the wheel touched it they MELTED.
SOOOOOOO Saturday afternoon was spent starting with 60 grit sandpaper working my way up (or down?) to 600 grit wet paper and now they look just like when I started.
Lesson learned? If it isn't checkered there is probably a reason.

I wish I would have caught this thread sooner. I did some plastics work in Jr. High shop class and tried to do something similar on a different item with the same result. As soon as I touched my wonderfully and painstakingly grooved surface to the buffer... I had a bumpy blob of shyte.

I did some stuff in shop as well and thought it was a good idea. NOT!

You're past the point now, but another alternative would have been CLEAR skateboard grip tape
