The only illegal knife should be the one sticking out of someones sternum. Punish crimes, not tools.
There is never going to be an even playing field, so try harder.

Don't even think about going to the States with a knife that can be gravity assisted, you WILL go to jail. in my other life in the entertainment biz we were constantly telling riggers and stage crew to leave their knives at home and pick up a SHORT fixed blade knife and keep it in tool box at ALL times when not being used. Penalties vary from state to state but are usually very large fines and confiscation of your knife

    edit:
Law enforcement makes no differentiation between gravity and centrifugal force

My daughter bought me this for Christmas. I will not wear it. It has a belt clip on it. The blade flings open so easy. Not for me.

I wonder if this would also apply to knives with pocket gripper flippers?

You know the ones that open as you pull the out of your pocket as it snags the edge of your pocket.

I know a guy who was charged for storing a loaded firearm. It was a Chiappa Little Badger with spare rounds in the buttplate holder. Empty chamber. The "lab" had to prove that it was impossible to discharge from this state regardless of the manipulation required.

Punishment by process and to scare your comrades.
    That's not even funny.

So does this mean the end of 50% of the knives carried by retail like Cabelaís? They carry a lot of flip style knives by Benchmade etc.
