Welcome to the GOC. Everyone with a new gun does it differently. Myself, I make sure the barrel isn't plugged, I make sure it is operational (trigger and safety works), I check to see that all parts fit together as they should (no twisted barrels, sights on straight, etc) and then I take it to the range and blast away. Others will take it apart, clean it, lubricate it, put it back together and then take it to the range. If I tested it and found it didn't feel right then I would take it apart and check for the obvious. Sometimes a firearm has been sitting in the store for quite some time and would require an application of lubricant. Lots of you tube videos showing how to do it. Enjoy your shooting.

    Welcome to the GOC forums.

As for your breaking in question. Depends on what you are planning to do with the firearm (plinking vs. competitive shooting, what firearm did you buy, etc.) Best ask in General Firearms Discussion for the most input.(or whatever forum your firearm falls into)
