    Where you are matters.
The .300 Savage is primarily a reloader's cartridge. It's the case the .308 Win was made from and will do anything a .308 will do. Federal, Hornady(in their Superformance brand. Don't think I'd use that in a 99. It used to be called 'Light Magnum".), Winchester and Remington load it, but it won't be easy to find without a special order. Crappy Tire wants $45.99 per 20.
Canada Metal wants $63.95 per 50 for Hornady brass. Ain't cheap, but at least you can get it. Ditto for dies. Special order.
Savage 99 exploded drawing is here. http://stevespages.com/savage.html
Nearly everything Savage 99 is here. http://www.savage99.com/index.php
The M31 is the 870's daddy too. Produced from 1931 to 1949. Biggest downside is that there are no barrels or much of anything else available for 'em. Otherwise, the choke it has will determine what it's best used for. The choke will be stamped on the barrel somewhere. Might be just a number though.
Apparently, there are 3 different series of the 31 and not all parts interchange.
Exploded drawing for the 31 is here. http://stevespages.com/ipb-remington-31.html
    Manual is here. http://stevespages.com/page7b.htm
There's a couple Savage 99 manuals there too.

Did you get to try her yet? I love mine and the fact that the recoil is barely more than a 22 lr is awesome.
