    HSM with Berger HPBT

So I picked up some if these at the gun show, they say for hunting but the hollow point is so tiny it might as well not be there. I'm wondering if anyone has experience with these and if they should still be fine?

He's asking about HSM brand ammo, loaded with Berger bullets.

I have a buddy that uses them in an X-bolt in 300 WSM. They are quite lethal on whitetails, but they seemed to fragment a lot on the couple of shots I've seen the aftermath of. The exit side of one looked almost like a buckshot pattern, the deer was very, very dead though.

I was reminded of my experience with Sierra Gamekings in the 257 Weatherby. At shorter distances where the velocity is very high, they seem to disintegrate on impact, but the fragments still had enough inertia to penetrate out the other side of the chest cavity. Messy but effective. They'd probably do better at a slightly lower velocity, as I'd had good luck with Gamekings in the .308 and other more moderate cartridges.

So using them on bear where I want to keep the hide may not be recommended?

    Nope.

Ammo, camo and things that go "blammo".

What calibre? As I mentioned, they might perform a little differently with less speed.

308 Norma mag. I used it last year with round nose ammo and it was a clean in and out wounds not too bad. Although that went straight through chest and out the back, beautiful shot.

"...on bear where I want..." Killing Yogi humanely is far more important.
Berger makes 9 bullet weights in .30 cal. All of which are designed with controlled expansion in mind. Penetrates 2 or 3 inches before starting to expand according to their site. Which weight matters. However, a 155 will work. Assuming it's the Americanus version of Yogi not the Horribilis cousin. 185 or 190 for them.
