So tonight I happened to have an Russian laminate stock sks from Tula follow me home. After much begging and pleading including promises to buy Kate one, she said I could keep it, lol. Stripped it down, cleaned off the cosmoline, removed firing pin and cleaned the crap out of the pin and the channel as well. Bore is a little shiny but the rifling is in great shape. Heading to the range tomorrow to put some rounds through it. on the agenda as far as mods go it the side eject mod, and possibly a magwell adaptor to use the 7.62x39 pistol mags so I can have 10 round mags and enjoy shooting it the way it was intended. Sad that using a different mag makes it legal, anyone interested in an sks pistol? rofl. Anyhow, if yall have any links to ar style mags in an sks please post em in here. I am not looking to do the "duck bill less" tapco mod, ar style mags only please. I will toss up some pics after the range tomorrow.

To allow AR mags in the SKS, I know you have to do some machining on the bolt. I've never seen a successful conversion in person, but I have seen at least two unsuccessful ones.

nope, none refurb. bayo was replaced at some point with a refurb one however no refurb markings whatsoever, and other than the bayo nothing indicates a refurb. stock is great with no dents or dings in her, everything functions great, no ftf or fte issues, really spits the empties too. lol. then only issue is that i keep expecting 10 bangs not 5. found a couple ar mag examples so far, one that appears to feed and function great. we will see what happens.

I have and it requires more than machining the bolt it also includes the receiver and modifications to be done to the follower that include welding a tab for the follower and machining an adaptor to go were the duck bill mag was. Plus the magazine receiver walls need to be enlarged but nothing that a guy with a milling machine can't do for you in a 8 hour work day.

I here ya but after it was made the machine shop that I constantly go to wanted to make it and it has been missing from my locker for about 6 months now. So I am not at liberty to say. Just like how I designed a mount for another rifle that is quite similar to this rifle but chambered in 7.62x54R. It's sells for $250 and I made a mount that almost any one can use and install but it's still at the shop waiting to get made also. Not much I can do about it though. Sorry for being a d!@k tease but I will release photo's on here as so as I am allowed.

Haywire1
10-22-2013, 10:23 PM
And speaking of plans, after removing the front sight, and the barrel from the receiver, first, we shortened it to 19"
http://imageshack.us/a/img856/4174/x3m7.jpg
And then we machined the last three inches of the barrel to a straight diameter, basically the final 3" are the same outside diameter as the original muzzle
http://imageshack.us/a/img407/2180/i8dx.jpg
Then, an 11 degree target crown was added, because we could...

Bit of both actually. one angle looks reddish, from another, the cross grain is quite shiny peppery looking. very unique look to it, I like it. once it is tru oiled we will see the final result. then I will take the time for some proper photos in decent light of the stock

now I am debating arma coating it.... but we will see

ok, MUZZLE BRAKE IS DONE!!!! Design is loosely based on the Belgian FN-FAL style muzzle brake. we shortened the barrel to 19". the final 4 ish inches are actually inside the brake, only the final 1" of the brake does anything. I wanted to make a short barreled sks, while staying legal. without further ado:

I have a few things on the go that have to get looked after first Satain.

1. Finish Christmas shopping
2. I'm in the process of making a mold to make Ruger 10/22 bolt buffers.
3. I need to make a muzzle brake for my Browning
4. I've got to do a job for Grizzaxxeman (sp)
5. Keep doing my day job. :)
6. ...and this may take a bit of my effort for a while....my wife and I are adopting a little boy with autism, tourette's syndrome, and a few other issues. :)

I have every intention of doing many many many gun bits and pieces over the next while, but they'll be few and far between for a while...number 5 and 6 are kind of time consuming priorities. Damn..I hate being a responsible adult. :D LOL !

Oh...and those brakes will be custom fit to your barrel, so I'll need it here....and if we're taking it out of the receiver here, you get to be here to help. Ask Haywire what was involved in just getting the front site off of his. This gunsmithing thing isn't as easy as it seems sometimes. If something is going to get banged up while trying to take it apart, you get to be the guy swinging the hammer. :)

Haywire1
11-09-2013, 10:14 PM
yeah, heat bang heat bang, bigger hammer, more heat bang, wait a minute, we are shortening the barrel. place muzzle on concrete, heat bang, give up on banging and cut the damn front sight bayo mount off with a grinder.

and if you like it now Satain, wait till its together later. finish is curing, gimme a couple hours and there will be before and after pics

as far as the Anti Queentard liking it, you could give her a cheesecake and she would bitch the spoon made her fat, so she deserves the same consideration as a fart bubble in the bathwater, ie, none

Range report:

Had the opportunity to go to RSDC today, very classy place I must say, job well done .50cal!! computerized target mover thingys and everything. On to the sks

Took a few rounds to get the red dot sighted in, but since I just slapped it on, and not even bore sighted, wasn't too bad. ran through the green cased stuff I had with zero issues, when I switched to the non lacquered stuff I had about every second round not clearing the receiver before the next round was in place. .50 let me into the back secret Bobcat parking garage where I swapped out the tapco for the factory mag, and tried the non lacquered stuff again, and zero issues. I assume the spring in the tapco is either to strong or too weak for feeding. Based on what I saw, to weak. ah well, I will try another mag and see what happens, for now, I will just run the factory mag.

Rifle is very well balanced, about a half inch in front of the mag is where the balance point is. As far as accuracy, considering I am using a red dot with a 5MOA dot size, I think it was pretty good. see pic below. As far as recoil, yes, reduced. how much of that is from the extended pad, and how much is from the brake is unknown however. The funny thing is the people on either side of us were also firing sks's, stock. I got a look or two when I uncased it but noone said anything. After firing, I had a crowd however. "Thats an sks?" seemed the common one. The fact the barrel looks so short as well as the flame issuing from it got some attention. It isnt much louder then stock, but having 6" of flame shooting out in an X pattern, as well as a 2' fireball out the muzzle gets some looks, lol. I still have a couple things to do to it yet, it appears picatinney sling mounts are unobtainium at the moment, so the tactical sling is unmounted. I made the decision today that yes, it is going to go get arma coated, and when I get a chance, it is also getting a larger charging handle. higher quality red dot, and buis are also down the road.

All in all, I love it. the little bit extra weight, the better LOP, the red dot, way it looks all contribute to what is, at least to me, one dead sexy DMR/SOCOM 16 inspired sks.

ok, today I decided since it shot so well with the shitty red dot, sloppy stock fit, and still not right lop, new stock and scope mount, and scope. I didnt want a typical tapco, or monte carlo, went a little different:
http://imageshack.us/a/img600/7741/q5rx.jpg
Choate dragunov stock, max wedge scope mount. did a bunch of work installing the stock, there is zero movement between the stock and the reciever. the max wedge rather than using a screw to hold on the rear bracket, it is now welded in place, resulting in again, zero movement. Tomorrow i will go buy a 3-9 scope for it, mount her up. then range time again

The wood stock was nice without all the extras added...especially that lop extender...friggin hideous that.

Haywire1
12-14-2013, 10:13 AM
yeah, but since i have gorilla arms, the lop extender was needed. it actually looked better in person than in pics. i liked it before, but it was more of a " check things out" than anything else. since it shoots so tight, now i am going to see just how tight a group i can get with surplus ammo, then factory loads, then handloads. i will eventually do an ar magwell up for it, just for 10 round goodness. and it is a cheap gun to play with and mod, as well as a good reliable toy/hunting rifle

With a 3x9 mounted are you going to disable the gas system temporarily to turn it into a single shot?

No need with the side eject mod done.
I did my last one and it spit cases straight out to the side...a long way...

Yep. Side eject mod was done right after the muzzle brake. And the rail has a deflector built into it anyhow. Cant wait to see how it will shoot now the play is out of the stock and with a half decent scope and mount on it. As long as it will minute of gopher at 100 I will be happy, but it is rapidly turning into my goto deer/vermit/shtf rifle.

One of the nice things about the SKS is they were built to be rugged irons that would take abuse.

Even though I never shot my Yugo(to pretty) and only put 5 rounds through my last Rusky...I'm starting to think a replacement is in order...just in case... ;D

Since my wife, knitewolf was nice, I got one of my presents early, a Bushnell banner dusk&dawn 4-12x40 scope and rings. I tossed a sling on it, just need to add a second sling stud as using one for the bipod and the sling is a little crowded.
Since everyone was bitching about bathroom pics, fine, here are some sexy bedroom pics:

that stock is definitely a step up!

oddly enough, I've had nothing but good luck with Banners.

I have a wide angle 3-9x40 that keeps finding it's way onto different rifles some how...

good scopes for the money.

We could turn this into a stuffed toy defence thread. What's the best rifle for a charging toy polar bear? Likely the answer would be a highly modified SKS. :shoot: Rifle is looking good.

well, with the 5moa red dot, i put 100 rounds through the x ring. that was with the huge red dot, sloppy fitting stock, and the lop was to short, and wobbly as well. now with decent stock, all bedded/shimmed, a solid scope rail, and good glass, we shall see.my goal is to meet us army sniper/dmr rifle accuracy standards with it, which is actually 1 moa

ok, I ordered some promag 5 round magazines, basically a 5/10 magazine. anyway, i get my shipment today, open it up, and aw sh!t, they sent me tapco 5/20's, which I did not want. Call up the outfit, and make arrangements to return the shipment. They felt so bad, after I mentioned I was leaving town on tuesday, and needed the sks for my trip, that I am getting the following:

3 promag 5/10 round magazines.... already paid for
Sks extended mag release... reimbursement for the return shipping
Murrays spring loaded firing pin, post '51.......free
wolf trigger upgrade package, new sear, hammer, trigger spring, and hammer spring, basically, a trigger job in a box, lower the trigger pull to 4-5 lbs, and eliminate the creep, and chunkyness.... free
also, because I am leaving tuesday, they are going to fedex the package to me overnight, so I get it on monday

so to sum it up, I ordered $100 bucks worth of stuff, and they are sending me my original order, plus the mag release in compensation for the shipping, and as an apology, another $100 worth of stuff, and to top it off, overnighting it in order to ensure I get it in time for my trip

total new parts so far, and i am not including anything not on this itineration, ie the refinished wood stock, the red dot, or the quad rail:

Choate dragunov stock
Utg bipod
maxwedge scope rail
Bushnell Banner 4-12x40 dusk&dawn scope
weaver extreme duty scope rings
uncle mikes sling, quick detach sling mounts
flipup scope covers
Shorten and target crown barrel, remove bayonet, front sight, bayonet lug front sling mount and custom BSD muzzle break
Murrays spring loaded firing pin
Wolf trigger upgrade package, (trigger and hammer spring, new sear and hammer)
extended mag release
promag 5 round magazines
added a second front swivel for bipod usage

with a wobbly receiver to stock fit, shotgun red dot mounted on the quad rail, which sandwiched the gas tube and barrel, LOP that was still and inch short, it put 100 rounds into a 1.5" group at 50 meters. I am hoping that after this I can meet the requirements that the US army requires its sniper rifles to meet, which is 1 moa. A lofty goal for an sks perhaps, considering that the dragunov, which the Soviets use as a dmr rifle, basically shoots 2moa, and is built for it, and the sks is simply a "disposable carbine" but I think I can do it.

Once I am done. The rear cover pin/chicago screw is a bit smaller than standard. It is close, but not the snug but moveable fit yet. Once I get back from holidays I will take a couple more thou off it. If ya zoom in on one of the od collored stock pics, you can see it in place. And I may sweet talk BSD into making me one, since I have a design in mind for it.....

Ok. Issues with the sks in rdsc. Totally unable to sight the scope in even close. After investigation it turns out the spring pin securing the front of the scope mount is slightly undersized, the spring in the rear sight is buggered and the aftermarket stock is molded crooked. Definate off kilter slant to it. So back to the original stock with some changes to it.....

When you said never ending you really meant it lol

Haywire1

Hence the title change. Actually I was happy with the looks and of it in the dragunov stock, but range testing revealed flaws. I did manage a .5 group, just nowhere near point of aim. Bedding it to the wood stock tonight. All in the name of accuracy. I thought a new stock would help but I actually found it somewhat uncomfortable. So back to wood. Just with bedding. Scope mount mounts into the rear sight with a spring pin, this rattled and the spring pin worked out, so now the front of the mount is tapped and the pin replaced with a bolt.

I know its got the potential, just a matter of finding the right combination.
Oh, I also got my package of goodies so the trigger job is done. New sear, hammer, trigger and all new springs. Trigger is now about 4.5 lbs and breaks a lot cleaner than before. Also intalled the spring firing pin, reduce the chance of slamfires when using factory ammo.

Ok. So there is a slight change of plans, again lol. Having unexpectedly come into possession of an sks with a completely buggered rear sight, as in cut off, there is some big changes in the wind. I am going to build a straight pull, single shot rifle, with a completely free floated barrel, no gas system at all. This one will have the 4-12x40 scope on it. The other sks will be built, uniquely. I just finished the calculations and reengineered the gas system, shortening it by the length of the rear sight, eliminating it from the sks all together. Designed a piece for the front of the magazine to mount into, as I need that to secure the ar mag adaptor.

So to sum up:
1) full on single shot, straight pull, muzzle braked, bedded action, free floated sks.

2) a somewhat russian version of an m1 carbine. Short, compact and using ar magazines. This one just using a red dot, with irons for backups.
