I've decided to get an 18.5 inch barrel Mossberg 590A1 w/ Ghost Ring Sights.

http://www.wolverinesupplies.com/wolverine/images/products/51517-MOS_1000.jpg

I figured that for the price (just under $600), it's the best mil-spec shotgun around.

I plan very little in terms of mods: a +1 mag extension to fit flush with the end of the barrel, a streamlined flashlight mount of some sort & a company called AIMPRO makes a Mossberg style heat shield that is designed to fit the thicker barreled 590A1.

Any thoughts?

I love my 870s but the Mossy is a solid design as well; plus one is always a great choice, and there are more accessories for the 590 coming out all the time. Does surefire make a forend for them? Lots of lights to choose from regardless.
I like slinging from the side with a mount in front of the buttstock/behind the receiver, but that's me.
It's a very nice shotgun, I'm sure you'll be happy with your choice:).

I plan on getting some sort of magazine tube clamp + rail so I can use a low profile flashlight such as the Surefire X300.

I know the magazine tube for the 590A1 is exactly 1 inch, so I've heard of people using a Scope ring + weaver rail piece to mount a flashlight. Not sure yet on how that would work out, but I'm still looking into it.

I'd like to keep the stock & forearm original unless I can find a proper wood version.

I just found this mount from CDM Gear Products, it is absolutely perfect for what I need, it's specifically designed for the 590A1:

Might have to use IRUNGUNS.CA to get it into the country though.

Only complaint for me would be the heavy barrel.

It is...HEAVY!!!

That's why I picked the 18.5 over the 20 inch. lol just kidding.

I don't know how the AIMPRO heat shield fits on but I bought a Mossberg 500P several years ago that came with a heat shield. It was difficult to fit as the heat shield diameter was narrower than the barrel. I couldn't get a plastic bar to fit between the front of the heat shield and the rear of the metal piece behind the barrel screw. Everything seemed fine, until I did some rapid firing and the heat shield slid forward on the barrel leaving some nasty grooves in the barrel. If you fit a heat shield don't take any short cut. If you are thinking about swapping out the stock, I would also recommend staying away from the ATI six position side folding stock. Looks cool, but I hate it.

Thanks for the heads up.

From what I've read so far, the AIMPRO stuff seems pretty rock solid as it is specifically designed for the 590A1.

My friend has that one with the extended mag tube. I intend to buy it from him in the near future.

He can ding a gong with slugs at 70m. It's unbelievable. Such a great gun, but yes it does get heavy when it's loaded up. Just gotta be a man about it though.

It was Benelli M4 or nothing for a while, but I realized that for $600 the 590A1 is a LOT of shotgun for the money.

I put my order in yesterday for this one:

I decided against the ghost ring sights, but ordered one of these:

This model seems to be the closest to what the USMC actually used, which adds a second kind of cool factor since I plan on getting a Benelli M4 one day.

I believe they used either a 16'' barrel or 20'' barrel with the 6-shot design.

You can also look into getting a tactical rail for it.

I plan on keeping this one bare bones. I've ordered a Hogue Overmoulded 12'' LOP stock, a TRUGLO starbright fiber optic bead and a mag extension.

Well guys, the shotgun arrived yesterday. It was a great day. Took it down, cleaned, oiled, function checked. Good to go.

I installed a Truglo fiber optic sight. I've got the Hogue 12'' LOP Overmolded stock & forearm arriving sometime today. The stock plastic furniture feels very cheap, but it's lightweight which is nice.

I'll write my first impressions after work today.

I'm installing the Hogue stock and forend right now. They feel a LOT better than the stock synthetic stuff.

With the 12'' LOP, I can comfortably do the law enforcement\military style stance. I'm about 5'11, 200lbs and the 14'' LOP stock is too long for the military stance, but perfect for the weaver stance. I figure if I ever want to shoot weaver, I'll get a thick buttpad that slips over the Hogue stock. I've read that it's better to have a short stock that can be elongated than a long one you can't shorten, and I have to agree.

if your still looking for light mounting options, I got the MOD-C by CDM Gear for my 870 from S&J...best looking option IMO and anything they make is probably going to last a life time...the next shotgun I buy is going to be a 590A1...and i'll decide on the outcome of this epic battle myself...

Hey guys. This is my first post, I just thought I would chime in and say I bought this gun a few months back, 18.5 inch, ghost ring sights and god damn... it is just so great. Anyway, good to be here.

I'm curious, how easy was the install on the sight post? Anything you would do differently?

I installed a HiViz bead on my 14" 590A1. I found it to be quite simple to do, and a definite improvement over the factory metal front bead.
