I've asked this question before somewhere else, But i want to see what OUR members do with their m14 and variants.

I'm an Iron man myself

I prefer iron sights and actually shoot more accurately with them than a scoped. M14. On one of my M14's though I was trying to emulate the Designated Marksman concept. It's ok and interesting at longer ranges 3-500 yds but the M14 was meant to be shot with irons, imho.

Where do red dots fit in? Not really a scope, as there is hardly any magnification.... but not irons either.

Both my Springfield and Norinco are scoped but with quick detach rings. My future builds will have the same.

I'm a firm believer of learning to shoot with irons first, and then adding the optics.

I have my red dot set up to cowitness with my iron sights....At Hungry,s clinic in petawawa over the weekend I was making center of mass hits at 500 yards using my iron sights. !!!
The red dot is for zombies in low light conditions up close or when I take it hunting .

I used my irons at the CDTSA last sunday, Almost out shot myself with the M14 irons compared to the AR15 with optics.
The Irons on the m14 IMO are one of the best designed irons every

I love M-14 iron sights, but I had a Norc M-305 that I built a scope mount for and used it scoped after that. It worked very well.

If I manage to get an M-1A I'll leave it iron.

+1

I resisted glass and shot with irons and forward mounted red dots only for many years before running a nice Leupold.

My CQB-16 has a Mark 4 1.5-5x20mm MR/T with M2 dials and Illuminated SPR mounted on a LaRue LT608
My Mod 0 has a Mark 4 3.5-10x40mm LR/T with M2 dials and Illuminated TMR mounted on a M14/M1A CASM.
Both use SEI's Wire Electro Discharge Machine (EDM) 30mm Rings.

IMHO, the longer sight radius of the 22.0" barrel with a muzzle device that retains
the castle nut and original front sight location is best for shooting with iron sights.

I recently ordered two lrb rigs from armtac a m14sa with 18.5 tube that I will be shooting irons and a m25 with a 22" tube that I will be throwing a fixed 10x power on.

Do both!! I've got the Pro-mag copy of the Smith Enterprises 2006 mount. It has the cut channel down the middle to be able to use irons if your scope should be pooched.

Yeah, me too. I really like that stock but I'll have to wait to do that to the next one I get. Mine right now is going to be used for hunting season and that stock adds another 2 lbs to an already heavy rifle.

Not no more they stopped making them now. Although Awern Ace on CGN get's SEI vortex's in 223 and you can bore it out to 308 specs.

If so it is made for the American barrel's but Skullboy was the one who told me that it would work on the Norinco barrels and so I tried it...
Yep worked just fine. Ping's like an SOB!

Flash Hiders are a no go right with the State Dept.

Muzzle Brakes and Compensators are OK, flash hiders not so much...

The m305 I had was iron sights. Sold it. Had big plans to scope it, but after getting it in my hands I felt it was best left with irons.

Iron sights all the way, well... until I really need the optics after my eyesight starts going on me.

I've been shooting with irons and I'm fairly accurate but decided to get CASM mount and planning to use it with 1.25-8 Bushnell 6500...the eyes are just not what they used to be!
