Very nice! Congratulations. In the pic the metalwork sure has a nice patina.

I'm liking bayonets more and more as I grow...experienced in life.

It's definitely a old war horse rebarreled after WW1 for 8x56, and for the price I couldn't pass it up.

Bayonets are always interesting as is all the other bits and bobs that went along with the rifles.

I have 2 of them. The short carbine model one in full wood stock and a sporter model. I found some ammo for it in calgary in stock. They are suppose to kick but haven't fired it yet. I picked them up because I like the ross straight pull bolt. And this is the rifle ross took the straight pull idea from. Did you get the needed strip clips to fire it. If not i have seen them on eBay.

John, can you tell us the year and make? MOST are Steyr, but some were made in Budapest.

I have a long rifle like yours, built at Steyr but a 1903 date and the Royal Bulgarian crest. It has been converted (as yours) by reboring and rerifling the old barrel for 8x56R.

Also have a Police Carbine here, a Steyr with commercial 1917 proofs and a Hungarian Police cruciform bayonet. It is still in 8x50R.

If you are out this way some time, do bring it along. I have a bucket of ammo already loaded up.

And yes, recoil is murder, plain and fancy. You KNOW you have fired something.

Merry Christmas all.

And John: couldn't happen to a nicer guy!

It's a Steyr made in 1917, However most of the visible markings are very faint I can see what I think is the double shield which would be Emperor Karl I of Austro-Hungary.

I'll definitely have to bring it and a few others out your way and pulverize my shoulder for a bit someday. And a drool bucket for you collection of goodies.

Happy Christmas everyone
