View Full Version : SHOT Show 2014: We are here!

Hey all, Daniel Fritter here; publisher dude. I'm down in Vegas again, representing Calibre at SHOT, playing with sweet ass guns, and trying to convince companies to advertise.

Having landed yesterday, I spent Monday afternoon wandering over to the grocers to grab some food makings (got a wicked hotel suite with a massive kitchen), and then meeting with a couple writers; Al Voth and Lowell Strauss. From there, we headed over to the Hard Rock to meet Shawn Bevins from the NFA, and ended up having beers with the team from Funker Tactical... and it now looks like we're heading towards some pretty exciting cross-promotional opportunities between Calibre and Funker Tactical!

Which brings us to this morning, and the first day of SHOT. And what better way to wake up than to the pounding noise of some UH-60s flying in formation outside my window?

Yeah. That's pretty friggin' cool. From there, I wandered down the strip, and grabbed my media pass. My first stop? Leatherman. Because I'm a dork and multitools are awesome. They had a couple new tools to show off, including a revised Juice that features new textured and coloured scales and a couple polished scales. Why? Because the Juice is the most-gifted Leatherman, and now people can get 'em engraved!

Also new is this tool designed for use by kids... yes, that's right, Leatherman's making a tool for kids! I know, it sounds silly, but it actually makes sense and there are a lot of design features that will make it really good for children. For example, it ships without the knife blade, so kids can learn to use the tool first. The blade itself is blunted on the end so they can't poke themselves with it. The grips are smaller, and have finger grooves on one side only to promote cutting away from the body. And folding the knife requires pressing the lock on both sides, thus keeping small hands out of the way of the blade!

Next up was Bushnell... because their booth is close to Leatherman's. First up from them is a new Millett DMS. It's similar to the older model, but is slightly improved in pretty much every way. Felt really nice; smooth turret movements and really positive clicks.

If you like long-range shooting, Bushnell's also rolling out a new rangefinder specifically for shooting. Not hunting, not golf, but shooting. The main feature here is that it'll measure out to a mile, and that it can translate angle of attack (like shooting up a hill or down into a valley) and distance into an equivalent horizontal distance. Like, if you're shooting 800 metres up a hill, it will take that angle into account and read out an equivalent distance of, say, 820 metres to compensate for the uphill angle. Then you just dial that range in and shoot.

For less long distance shooting, Bushnell's launching their first red dot scope, and it's in the Elite Tactical line. It's a nice unit, not really sure there's too much to say though; it's another $350 red dot.

THIS is the big news from Bushnell: the Long Range Tactical Hunter scope. A hunting optic with a military-style BDC reticle, exposed target turrets with zero-stop, and the reticle in the first focal plane, it's sort of a low-profile style hunting scope that can also shoot at long range. Of note, it felt really really nice, and the reticle is AWESOME. Lots of info, but not overly complex. I think I will probably get one.

Ahhhhhh onto the next booth...

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5472/11959384306_8a2c97a8b6_b.jpg

What's new? Well... this Ruger 10/22. They're engraving all the 10/22s this year with some special markings to celebrate the 50 year anniversary of the world's favourite rimfire rifle, and this model also features a picatinny rail, different sights, the stock of the American Rimfire Rifle, and a Gunsite scout rifle-style flash hider... you know, because the muzzle flash of a .22is SO bright. But, barring that, the rail is cool, as is the stock.

http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2839/11959383866_de7e16cc9b_b.jpg

Also new? Some new American Rifles. On top is a new "American Revolution" package rifle that pairs the American-made American Rifle with an American-made Redfield Revolution optic. Below that, a new stainless model... very nice. And finally? The American Rifle in .223; a new chambering.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7411/11958988614_676a918c59_b.jpg

Revolver guys will like this. A factory-prepped match gun, this one features an action that's been slicked up by Ruger, a reduced barrel lug, and a slab sided barrel. It also has a Hogue grip made for Ruger, and some new sights. It was very, very nice, and has us thinking we need to feature on.

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5476/11958988354_1bc429d90f_b.jpg

Another new one: the 22/45 Lite. With a tiny little stainless barrel surrounded by an Aluminium sleeve and a polymer frame, this thing weighs only 27 ounces.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7417/11958556105_fdd1d00a75_b.jpg

Now here's something I can sink my teeth into... at least, a part of something I can sink my teeth into. Long story short, this is the gas system inside Ruger's new .308 AR and it uses an interesting two stage gas expansion chamber to cycle the action and recude recoil. Gases are bled into the regulator on the left, and the piston's smaller crown that fits into the regulator is subjected to more pressure because the gases are filling a much smaller area. This releases the action and helps the gas system overcome the stiction of the action while it's locked up. Then, as it moves backwards, the piston crown escapes the regulator, and the gases are allowed to fill the larger gas chamber, which reduces pressure. That means less recoil, and less wear and tear.

So what's the gun look like? Pretty bloody good. And it felt as nice as it looks. Damn you Canadian gun laws!

Chiappa is always good for an interesting gun or two, and this year they're continuing with that trend. On the top two racks of this gun display is their new 20-gauge over 22-LR M6 and 12-gauge over .22 version of the same. Nothing terribly cool (they're more tool-like than nice), but the 12 gauge has a pretty nifty feature: it comes with 8 tubes that can be put into the chamber of the 12 gauge barrel and allow the gun to shoot a number of pistol calibres. So, it could be a 12 gauge over 22, or it could be a .44 Mag over a 22... or .357 mag... or, or, or. And those tubes will fit all over 12 gauge shotguns too!

http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2828/11958987454_2d0e0010d6_b.jpg

Also cool is Chiappa's take on the Model 39 lever gun. 22LR + easily broken-down lever gun, with very nice case colouring? DO WANT.

Tomorrow I'll take more pictures, and I have some meetings that should culminate in some interesting news to report both for Calibre as a magazine, as well as for all you Canadian gun owners!

Ask chiappa when the pistol grip or .22 mag little badger will be available.

That 1/2 size rail for my badger where the pistol grip is supposed to go always pisses me off.

I don't think that's it lone wolf, the factory mount is a 1/2 size rail with two holes threaded into it. That is just one hole and no rail guide. And his review is the only picture of that grip.
Chiappa has not listed an accessory or handle for this rail and I think it is time they got some pressure to show one.

Jon, that's not only a P90 (all p90s are full auto, the ps90s on the other hand...) but that's a P90 with an internal laser! *drool*

I already own one, I want chiappa to put out the pistol grip for it that fits that custom rail behind the trigger guard.
