01-28-2014, 02:45 PM
Hello Gun Owners of Canada,

My name is Melissa Mathieson, and I am currently seeking the Conservative Party of Canada nomination in Macleod.

I am a strong advocate and supporter of safe and responsible firearm ownership and believe that the rights of firearms owners need to be protected.

I want to share my firearms policy with you in this forum and would appreciate your comments and input

If you like what I stand for, then please help me mobilize like-minded gun owners and advocates to support me on election day. The area where I'm running covers Springbank, Turner Valley, Long View, Black Diamond, Okotoks, High River, Nanton, Stavely, Claresholm, Granum, Fort Macleod, Cowley, Pincher Creek, Hill Spring, Glenwood, Carmangay, Champion, Vulcan, Arrowwood, Milo, and Lomond.

In order to vote, constituents require a $15.00 Conservative Party of Canada membership. Memberships can only be purchased until February 10 and can be purchased by calling 1-866-808-8407 or online at www.conservative.ca

The vote will take place the week of March 3.

Take care,

Melissa Mathieson

Our Conservative Government has a long record of supporting the safe and responsible use of firearms. For over seventeen years the Conservative Party of Canada opposed the wasteful and ineffective long-gun registry. In 2012 Prime Minister Harper triumphed against Liberal and NDP opposition and scrapped it entirely. Law-abiding farmers, hunters and rural Canadians in Macleod are no longer forced to waste their valuable time and resources dealing with red tape, bureaucracy, and over-regulation.

However, even though the long-gun registry has been eliminated, other politicians have targeted the rights of rural Canadians, duck hunters, sport shooters and other long-gun owners by threatening to bring it back. The leader of the NDP, Thomas Mulcair, has clearly said he would reinstate the registry, if he were given the chance.

The people of Macleod can count on me to make sure that the long gun registry is never reinstated. As Macleod’s Member of Parliament, I promise to be there to advocate on behalf of firearms owners and stand up to those who seek to punish responsible gun owners and treat them as criminals. I am a strong advocate and supporter of safe and responsible firearm ownership and believe that the rights of firearms owners need to be protected. I will oppose wasteful regulations and programs that target law-abiding gun owners and make sure that gun owners are never treated as criminals. Under my watch, taxpayer dollars will not be spent on wasteful programs that fail to prevent crime.

As your MP, I would see that the rules for gun owners be made clearer, more predictable and streamlined. Constituents in Macleod deserve a system that they can easily navigate and comply with, and I intend to do all that I can to bring much-needed common sense back into the equation.

Specifically, I believe that licenses should be valid for at least ten years, as opposed to five, and that government should cut red tape associated with the licensing process. A good starting point would be to combine the two existing forms of licenses (PAL and POL) into one. I also strongly believe that the RCMP’s unilateral reclassification of firearms should be curtailed so that arbitrary decisions no longer dictate which firearms responsible owners can and cannot possess. Responsible gun owners are not a threat to public safety, violent criminals are.

And here I was all ready to start chastising "we already have a thread..." :p

Welcome to GOC Melissa!
You may be preaching to the choir here, but it might prove to be a good place to help get the message out.
It's nice to see pro-gun or even just open minded people getting involved, maybe especially in High River.

Is there anything that those of us out-of-province can do to help?

Close but not quite. I live in Chestermere. But at least you are in Alberta and very close to large group of gun owners who are very concerned about our future. I almost get the impression that GOC is the only firearm forum that is so actively involved in discussion of this aspect of the sport. So a very hearty welcome and I hope you post often and loud.

If you'd like to vote, make sure to sign up for a membership by February 10th. I'm hoping to mobilize as many gun owners and fellow Conservatives as possible.

Welcome Ms. Mathieson and may you win the election.

I, too, wish ontario had candidates closer to your position.

I would prefer to support someone who is more openly supportive of gun rights than someone that hides it.

There will be lots of time to hash out the finer points, but for now, Welcome!

You will find people a bit more down to earth on this pro gun website.

Will you be sharing any of your experience with the incident?
