Well... I finally bit the bullet and put down the cash on a preorder for something unique... Ruger made a very limited run of these and they aren't even a catalog item.. Ruger Scout rifle with a walnut stock instead of laminate... This will be my new walkabout deer rifle... I ordered an XS systems full length rail for it as well as a 3 round mag (Not preparing for the zombie apocalypse just yet and that ten rounder is just too much).... Will be here in about 6-8 weeks!... Looking to top it off with a Vortex Razor reflex site....

Oh cool! That will look sharp with a 3 round mag. Keep us updated when this comes in! I'm not supposed to buy any more guns this year, but I really like the short, medium throw weight, bolt action idea.

Will do... the nice thing is that the US took away the restriction so we can now get the scout models with the flash supressor.... pretty handy feature on a 16.5 inch barrel... If you are going to buy you may want to wait until current stock get sold out and the flash supressor models come in.... :)

Well.... finally, after waiting for the import to clear and the rifle to get to Prophet River, then waiting for it to get from Prophet River to me I will be picking up my Scout Rifle at the post office on the way home :)......

Have the XS Sight rail ready to install as well as th ethree shot mag I bought for it..... No optic purchased yet as nobody currently has the vortex I want in stock.....

I am like a kid at Christmas...... lol

Well.... I must say that I am very impressed with the fit and finish..... Unfortunately, I had no time to shoot her yet or even to add the XS site rail I picked up. I am really happy with the fit of the 3 shot mag I picked up and the bolt works like a dream.... very smooth......

Awesome. I would prefer the laminated stock but knowing I can't have this make me want it more.

4-14, and I haven't really had a chance to test it out. It was slipping in the rings and I had forgotten my tools to adjust it.

I hear that :) The season might come up fast but i suspect the deer will go down even faster with that little package :)

I sure hope so Foxer.... I plan to do a lot more spot and stalk this year than before... make the most out of the season and spend les time sitting in my tree stands....

Nothing like a slow walk through the hardwoods on a brisk full day with a nice light rifle.... Just ordered the Vortex Viper 1-4 and some nice low rings... should keep it short handy and light.... The old Rem 700 in .30-06 will still be getting tree stand duty though.... She's been good to me so can't let her languish at the back of the safe....

There's nothing like it :) Tracking them back home and kicking them out of bed is a huge thing to experience. We use very few tree stands here in bc, although we do use blinds and such. Spot and stalk is a hell of a rush. I hope you have great luck.

Okay.... Vortex viper pst 1-4 with TMRQ reticle is on it's way.... should be here by next Friday..... will likely get a few rounds downrange next weekend....

^Cool! That should be a nice reticle for hunting; I've peered through a couple at the range and they were very quick for me to centre, while being thin-haired enough to shoot precisely with if I chose.

That was the thought.... the 1-4 setting while on 1 should have it acting like a red dot and the capability to get up to 4x if I see one across the ridge would be helpful... bought the XS rail so I will have loads of options for eye relief and forward mounting, while not haveing to be stuck with a full scout style mount which cause th erifle to be front heavy....

The viper has a full 4" of eye relief, so I may just put it where it balances best....

Just curious, how is the weight and balance of this rifle? How do you think it will be for a full day or two walking/stalking in the woods? Beautiful rifle by the way. I have a Ruger rifle or two. Rugged and accurate.

Extremely rugged. . I am falling in love with this action more and more.... I am a pre marlin rem fan but handling these has made me realize how robust they are.... this is my secind m77 action and I think my focus is now pre marlin rems for older purchaces and the m77 for newer....

The balance is awesome and it weighs in at 6.8 pounds without scope.. that is why I think the xs rail is key.... put the scope where it balances best.. this is a purpose rifle for me... I already have an aught 6 so the calibre is redundant.... I purchased this for reliability and ease of carry.... so far I am sure it will do both.... accuracy?... we will see.... more to come...

That looks like a nice rifle but I am starting to feel like a fudd. I would rather buy a jungle carbine.

LOL.... I struggle with the rail too.... but never been an enfield fan and the barrel on the scout id 4 inches shorter.... plus 308 is way cooler than 303.... lol

Yeah.... dissapointed actually... not much use in a hunting application.... I really wish they would have offered a .358 win or even a .375 Ruger option....

Extremely useful around here, where the biggest thing to hunt is a yote.

Ya... but why would you want a scout rifle for that?.... sciuts are meant for walkabout applications...

I know pei is small, but there's still room to walk around! :p
Honestly a ruger mini would probably serve the same purpose. Truck gun pretty much, and would be useful for on the property varmints.

My only concern in 223 would be the barrel length.... at 16.5 inches you will lose some oomph on the 223... I am losing some on the 308, but being that I have it for 150 or less (more likely under 100 or even 20 on a jumped whitetail) I am good with that... nit sure I would give that up on a 223...

My 13" 5.56 barrel provides a pretty awesome fireball, even in bright sunlight.

:D

I've never shot longer than 100+ yards so I don't know what I'm missing with a shorter barrel but I do like the accuracy a short, fat barrel gives you on the shorter-range stuff.

Well.... the kids got in the way of me getting out shooting this weekend.... the usual, one to hockey, the other to swimming etc. etc...... but I did manage to get the XS rail and scope installed..... went with th eVortex Viper PST 1-4 with TMCQ illuminated reticle..... anxious to get her out shooting.....
