I tried to post a picture of it.......

I bought a Howa 1500, in a 7mm rem mag and added a redfield Revenge scope to it. It was a debate after my savage 99 in 308 had problems with mounts. I had to change the rings on the rifle to accommodate the new scope, and found the front base was off to the right about 3 thousands of an inch. That makes the windage impossible to adjust. I called my gunsmith buddy who said '99's are bad for that and tapping is very expensive because of the steel on them.

So I had been debating going up to the 7mm Rem Mag, or staying with the .308. If I ever wanted to shoot out beyond 600 yards, then I would need the 7mm. The .308 would not do it. So I come home, bore sight it, and make up some rounds. (168 Hunter VLT berger magnum primer and H4831 65 grains) I sight in with these rounds, for 300 yards. I am shooting 1/8 group at 300 yards. So I take her out to 400 yards, and I'm doing a 3/4" group. I would post pictures, if I could....

So I chronograph the rounds, and am shooting at 3245 pretty consistent. I'm pleased:)

3/4 inch groups at 400? Daaaamn - that's pretty darn good :) I'd be pretty pleased myself :) Not that I can shoot well enough to get those groups even if the rifle could.

I've never shot a Howa, they look like nice rifles though.
Groups like that would have me celebrating with a caramel sundae! There's a picture posting tutorial in the photo forum, I believe?

Foxer, I'm using a bench rest. Wonderful thing about high power scopes, you can see out that far...and I've been shooting for a year or two....

A year or two? :) Well, now you're just embarrassing me :) Fact is, my shooting career (such as it is) has never really included long range shooting. i'm mostly focused on 'minute of moose' in the 300 yard or less range and close quarters combat with grouse and ducks, with the odd bit of 'quick draw' against bush deer thrown in. Your skills at longer range precision clearly exceed mine. I'm sure i could practice up to it fairly fast, but i must say that's very impressive performance on your part getting there from scratch in a year or two - well done! I've been shooting since i was 6 years old and it would likely take me a the better part of a year to get that good with any consistency. You should be proud of your accomplishments.

Now - if you wanted to see who could drop the hammer fastest on a deer bolting out of it's bed, I might be able to give you a run for your money :)

Is that because of the gun or the caliber? Pretty sure I've heard alot about pushing the .308 out to 1000 yards. Friend of mine and I pushed a .300 Win Mag out to 750m yesterday, and if I'm not mistaken it's not a whole lot different than .308.

Shooting a lot better than my howa, but I think I'm gonna blame the hogue stock on mine and poor shooting setup.
What stock is on yours?

300 win mag is a lot different than 308. :) you're thinking 30-06 i suspect, they're a lot closer than most ppl think

I've been shooting for a bout 43 years, I shot competition as a young Air Cadet.

Besides it was a nice excuse to add another one to the mix....

Actually that is my downfall, I've always had to stop and calculate my shot. Though 90% of the deer and game I've shot has been under a hundred yards, and shot with a 3030. Remember this is bench rest shooting not free hand, or bipod (which seems to be more the constant for me after my shoulder injury.

ah, that's right. i was thinking of the 30-06 ballistics. that said, the .308 is certainly a 1000 yard caliber from all the stuff i've read and heard is it not?

Yes 308 will do 1000 yards.

Oh, I thought I replied to this, bacon induced hallucination maybe.
Here's the link in the Photo+Video Hub forum:
http://gunownersofcanada.ca/showthread.php?53-Tutorial-How-to-Post-Pictures

What it boils down to is creating an online photo album (Photobucket, imgur, flikr) and pasting the IMG link in the "Insert Image" box in the post toolbar; it's the third pictogram on the right, a square picture of a tree with little black dots in the corner.

.308 works fine for deer? Short action, 150-180gr bullet, (165 is a nice number) what's not to love? I'd hunt moose with it (say, 180gr Swift A-Frame?), shot placement trumping all else and all that.

LOL - we meant at 1000 yards :) Not quite enough oomph at 1000 yards for big game. At slightly more sensible ranges it's quite lethal on anything short of grizzlie (and it would do a number on them too in most cases, but it's perhaps a tad light for some people's tastes).

Quote my post and look at the funkiness, then compare it to your photobucket album, should be the same bunch of goobledegook under "IMG", I think it's the bottom option. Just cut and paste it:).

You don't have to submit the post, just preview it to see it working.
Nice rifle and groups!

Thanks I work hard at it. The top one is 103, the next down is 198 the third down is 306, yards, and the fourth is 422. Every shot we waited for the wind to stop. As I have found out, you need to clean a new rifle after every shot...

Long range shooting.... *tear

Maybe it's time to get a bench - off a bipod my 25 yard group looks like your 422 yard with my .308.

Are you loading your own or factory? we found the magic load was 130 grain, Barnes TTSX with 45 grains of IMR 3031 My buddy like the 155 berger with the same powder and amount for the 308.This spits them at around 3,000 FPS. The magic round for our 7mm Rem Mags is 63 grains of IMR 4350, pounding a 140 grain nosler accubond at around 3250.
