TEAM CSSA E-NEWS - May 8th, 2012

Please find enclosed the following letter from Minister Toews. Thank you all for your support and a special thank you to the government of Stephen Harper for standing up for the rights of all Canadians.

Commissioner Robert Paulson

Assistant Commissioner Pierre Perron
Director General Canadian Firearms Program

--

Dear Commissioner Paulson and Assistant Commissioner Perron

Canadians gave our government a strong mandate to end the wasteful and ineffective long-gun registry once and for all. Bill C-19, the Ending the Long-Gun Registry Act, did just that.

It has been suggested in various media reports that Chief Firearms Officers, acting pursuant to their purported authority under the Firearms Act, are attempting to collect point of sale data that they are no longer authorized to collect pursuant to Bill C-19. To be clear, the Firearms Act neither authorizes this activity, nor any other measures that could facilitate the creation of a provincial long-gun registry.

The Canadian Firearms Program and the RCMP at large are to provide no assistance or direction to any province seeking to undertake measures of this nature, except as expressly required by valid provincial legislation. The position of the Federal Government, as dictated by the will of Canadians, is that registration of long-guns is wasteful and ineffective. I expect that this position will be fully respected at all times, while respecting the judicial injunction in Quebec that we will continue to vigorously oppose in the courts.

If it comes to your attention that CFOs are interpreting the Firearms Act as a basis for unauthorized data collection, please advise me immediately. I am prepared to consider all legislative and regulatory measures necessary to give effect to the will of Canadians.

Yours truly,

Vic Toews, P.C., Q.C., M.P.

Cc: All Chief Firearms Officers

Well at least he came back from his earlier "we won't stand in the Province's way" position ...

He didn't!

He left a little present in there exempting information collected due to provincial legislation!

Lets see the valid provincial legislation. He may be referring to Quebec in the event that they get their way.

If anyone that thinks this change was a voluntary action by the Minister had better check his previous statements that this was a Provincial matter and he wasn't going to get involved. The CSSA challanged the CFO's position and boycotted their meeting in Ontario last weekend, as a result Sun News gave this issue very extensive coverage and along with Tony Bernardo's contining work in Ottawa the Minister was convinced to change his mind and enforce the law. If CSSA/CILA had not challenged this issue the CFO's/RCMP would still have their collective boots on the neck for gunn owners and firearm businesses.

Part of a carrot and stick situation. The CSSA was the stick. Although the fundraising for the first quarter was just released do you not think the CPC has noticed a huge donation spike following C-19. I would like to think that gun owners have the complete attention of Harper and the CPC.

Post C-19 donation to the CPC and CSSA membership: money well spent.

This isn't really "progress" per say. It's just reinforcing that the law that was laid down in C-19 shall be followed. I'm sure not complaining by any means. It's good to see the CFO's being reminded that they aren't law "makers". I still don't trust that Tricky Vic is actually on our side....rather, I think he's on his own side. Time to write a letter to my MP, and give the CSSA another donation. Way to go Tony !

The fruits of CSSA's labour certainly does not/will not go unnoticed.

Thanks for posting that ! I really like the fact that Vic is making his point in this very clear. Before Ontario and Quebec get their own legislation in place, the feds need to do a completely new firearms act and scrap C-68 completely. NOW would be a good time to start.
