A gendarmerie or gendarmery (/dʒɛnˈdɑrməri/ or /ʒɑːnˈdɑrməri/) is, in principle, a military[1] force charged with police duties among civilian populations. Members of such a force are typically called "gendarmes". These units are also associated with other descriptions, such as maréchaussée (marshalry) or Guard or Constabulary. The Shorter Oxford English Dictionary describes gendarme as "a soldier who is employed on police duties" and a "gendarmery, -erie" as "gendarmes as a body".

Following the Napoleonic era the creation of French style military forces with police functions was widely imitated in European states as well as in many former French colonies and mandated territories

so is the RCMP military?

They are considered as "Veterans" by the Gov and are entitled to the same benefits and programs as Soldiers are when retired.

The rcmp was begun as an army to occupy Canada. The USA was upset with the term Army so it was changed to police.

The RCMP is identified as The Queen when sued. Not rcmp , just The Queen. So it is a part of the federal government. For instance when a person sues the government , such as a minister the defendant is The Queen. And when the RCMP is sues the defendant is the Queen. Not like a municipal police force where that service is named. Like suing Toronto Police Services. Nope the RCMP is The Queen.

Established by a federal act.
