Savage Model 24J-DL, .22lr/410
Not the fancy deluxe version, but the plain black deluxe version.

Anyways, needs to be reblued, .22 barrel looks like it needs a cleaning, front sight is missing and rear sight is sans an elevator and is pretty loose.

Edit:
Oh yea, it has a home made sling adapter... a couple 1/2" EMT straps around the 410 barrel and screwed together.
I also had a 1/2" EMT strap in my pocket from work, when I showed up to look at the gun. I assume this is a good sign.

Interesting gun. I'm trying to fix one up too.

I haven't seen one with the checkering before. I had a friend's Savage 24 for a while and I had free reign to refurbish it for him. Here is how it turned out: http://www.gunownersofcanada.ca/showthread.php?17457-Another-great-job-from-CerakoteBC&highlight=Savage

I have seen some pictures of a 24 with 30-06 over 20 gauge - I'd like to get my hands on one of those.

Hey...any gun that goes boom when it's supposed to, and hit's what it's supposed to....without blowing up in your face....is a good gun. :)

savage never made the model 24 in 30-06. the action isnt strong enough, being based on 12ga. the largest centerfire caliber available was 30-30

Always wanted one but never pulled the trigger, 22/410 is a nice combo

Cool project. Lemme know where you find an elevator. I need one too. I still haven't started on mine.

Gotcha - I knew it was a 30 something. ;) Still would be a great truck gun combo with a 20g.

If I end up making an order with numrich I'll get a spare for ya.

Zedbra - the savage looks great!

The side of the receiver on this one has a fox scene on one side, and partridge scene on the other.
I enjoy that from older firearms. Any new ones I get never have anything interesting on the receiver.

Lone-wolf and Awndray, skip Numrich. Western Gun Parts has an elevator & rear sight blade combo for $10.00, universal fit if you're not hung up on a 100% authentic restoration. Talk nice and they'll like throw it in an envelope via CP.

I gotta call em. Need a front sight and screw mostly though. Pretty sure I have an elevator from a cooey kicking around home.

Was thinking of a dovetail to weaver adapter + a trs25? Crazy?

So I took the buttplate off, and in the stock screw hole was 2 AA batteries with electrical tape over the ends and what looks like a trigger lock key.

Those little surprises just make my day, like finding $5 in an old jacket pocket. ;)

Score one for the little bowl of keys that open nothing!

Stuck a new rear sight in the rear cutout and it appears that it's crooked.
Fudge. That's annoying.

Is it crooked though? Some dovetails have a very slight taper and the sight base only presses in from one side. Hard to tell from this picture.

The factory rear sight sans elevator was crooked too.
I think it was a messed up repair job.

I emailed skinner sights to see if they can do me up a peep sight/front sight combo.

I threw the sight in on the side that fit the best at the start(one side started a little bit, the other side wouldn't start at all), I assumed this would be correct without going internet sleuthing.

I have one, I found a Williams receiver sight made for the 24. Had a local gunsmith put it on and a slightly taller front sight. I love it, it's zeroed for the 22, and I just need to hold a bit high with my 410. Gun came to me through family, and I've take just shy of 50 grouse in two seasons wih it. Between the handy combination and family history it is by far my favourite gun in the safe.

Where'd ya find that? I see it on their website, but no one seems to stock it anymore.

Old stock at a surplus store in nb. Was the only one, sorry.

Gunsmith was Edmond Daigle of Cassie's gunshop in rogersville nb. He had to mill a small slot In the sights arm to allow clearence for the selector. I recall him commenting those sights were for the larger center fire versions. Top not job putting that on, modifying it, and putting a taller front sight. I'll try to get some pics up in the next few days.

Even if it takes some hunting, it a really nice sight and worth the trouble.

Found a williams sight off ebay.
So, front sight & new rear stock from numrich(or wgp) in the near future. Then off to a gunsmith(along with an ithaca 51, two birds with one gun smith) for rear sight installation.

Give me 2 days with nothing to do and I could make that baby look brand new!
Looks like it use to have the old lever style buck horns sliding rear sight and to pop a bead on I would do but in fact I would switch it up for one of those fiber optic clamp on 1's. The wood could also use a little TLC 2.
Nice score by the way and oh yeah polish the inside of the barrel with some JB cleaning compound.

Yours may need a small slot like mine, copy the photos in the other thread if a 'smith says it can't be done.

Are you referring to the notch that had to be cut out for the hammer to clear?

Well, I got a front sight for it from numrich along with my other parts. The williams sight now has an aperture from brownells.

Waiting on contacting a gun smith, waiting on time/money.
Looking at the rifle, and I now realize the bloody thing is bent. The tang has a noticeable bend in it. Hopefully that can be straightened.
