Ive got a Bushnell "First Strike" on one of my guns. Not too impressed with it. The tiny cheap-ass windage and elevation screws have no detents or locking deivice, And they wander after a few shots. I do like the low-profile aspect of it tho.
Anyone recommend the next step up ? Some magnification would be nice, But it seems that takes it into the trijicon $1000 range.

Well the vortex is a nice red dot with a magnifier (x2). It's a lot bigger than a first strike tho. Was there a size you were thinking of?

have checked out the vortex at the shop and it looks great. Saw the Bushnell TRS-25 got a good review for budget red dot on a blog.

I've got a bushnell 25 on a couple of guns (one a 303 so it can take a little recoil anyway). I like it for what it is - but no magnification options that i'm aware of so that's why i was thinking of the strikefire or the like.

if size isn't TOO huge a factor - for magnification and red dot you MIGHT want to consider an illumniated reticle dot, This one is pretty killer:

if you're looking for a little more 'discount' version barska has some interesting options that aren't too bad.

Barska wont hold up over time its like ncstar. Bushnell ar series scopes start at around 199$. I also have 2 trs 25. One on my sks and one on my 12 gauge. Vortex is good too.

It's a bit new still, but consider the Holosun. Micro-aimpoint size, and crazy battery life. Mount is a bit iffy though:
