View Full Version : making the crappy NC Star X-Bow a little less crappy

Bought this little crossbow for my stepson and at 8 years old even he was a little bit underwhelmed. Online it claims to be 90lb draw. HA!!! I'd be amazed if it was 30lbs. Now, I'm certainly not the first person to do this, and I got the idea from watching a bunch of youtube vids. I converted the rattley and weak compound bow with an 80lb recurve pistol bow. Now it throws the bolts hard and fast. The plastic bolts the bow came with were replaced with aluminum ones. Anyway, I'm not an archery guy by any means, and have very little interest in it so feel free to ridicule if you must, but I found these to be huge improvements to my kids "toy" and thought I'd share.

Those pics are kind of useless without some sort of explanation.

And no - you didn't make a 'crossbow pistol'. Crossbow pistols are illegal in Canada. You made a 'short crossbow'. See, it's got a stock and everything :)

I think he might be saying the new limb was made for a pistol crossbow?

Maybe - but a little more info or at least a link to whatever youtube video he used would go a long way towards making this useful :)

Good point, however leaving out all that detail was deliberate. The real archery guys on this forum certainly wouldn't care about a $60 NC Star crossbow, and anyone else who actually owns one of these should be able to easily see what I did from those two pics. Clearly my intent to post a quick anecdotal story backfired. :slap: I'll know for next time. I did mention I got the idea from youtube so anyone genuinely interested could look it up for themselves. Lastly I never said I made this into a pistol crossbow, but all the parts, the recurve bow, the aluminum bolts, and string, are listed on Amazon (where I bought them) as Pistol Crossbow parts. Here is one of several youtube vids on how I did it.

If it now works for your boy then great! I think you will find far less snobs in this site

sorry bud, didn't mean to sound quite so pointed about it - its just that I DON'T own one (because they're useless) and i couldn't see what you did, and it might be worth getting one if there's a way to improve it so... :)

Yeah, but my experience with that kind of thing is there's probably 10 different "Ideas" out there, only some of which worked. Obviously this worked well for you, so i was curious what you actually did to make it so much better.

Of course you didn't, but don't even call them "pistol" parts. It's just begging for trouble (trust me). You built a better crossbow out of crossbow parts. :) Trust me it's just better to get into that habit.

Thanks for the vid! :) it's a cool upgrade.

maybe, but that's what they are called. Everything was from Amazon (I forget if it was .com or.ca) either way it all shipped with no problem. The ads had them listed as such, at least at the time of purchase.
On a side note I took no offence by you pointing out my lack of info. My skin isn't so thin I can't handle a little criticism now and then on the internet. I rather appreciate you suggesting what you'd like to see in future posts and I'll take that advice.

Do you have before and after pics? And possibly a video of you or your stepson using it? Very interesting.

Thank you for sharing :D We're generally friendly here...not a lot goes on in the archery section so this was a pleasant read :D
