View Full Version : Awesome Optical Illusion

02-26-2015, 10:26 PM
Sounds lame at first, but then it gets interesting, and the internet is all abuzz about it.

It is all based on what colour you think this dress is. A lot of people are adamant that it's white and gold, and a lot of people are adamant that it's black and blue.

What do you think?

This is not a troll optical illusion, nor does the picture slowly change from one to the other.

I stared at this for a minute swearing that it was white and gold, but then my eyes started going cross eyed and I could actually see a black and blue dress, too, and it depends on how you think the light/shadow is hitting it.

02-26-2015, 10:40 PM
I'm seeing white and gold.

02-26-2015, 10:41 PM
I'm color blind. I'm going to sue you for your insensitive, and discriminatory post. :p ROFL !!!! It's purple and red by the way.

02-26-2015, 10:42 PM
I'm seeing white and gold.

Especially at the neckline? I stared for a bit and the bottom white started to look blueish, no real black though.

It looks like some crappy fluorescent bulbs giving the white a blueish hue, But clearly not black where the gold is.

02-26-2015, 10:46 PM
OK WTF!!!! it just turned black and blue...Petamocto what are you doing! This isn't funny!

02-26-2015, 10:49 PM
Still black and blue...

02-26-2015, 10:55 PM
I just brought my daughter in to use her eyes...I see black and blue now, she says I need glasses and its white and gold.

Uh oh, your eyes are broken:(. How are you going to get your Ultimate Operator patch? What colour is Herman the German?

I just brought my daughter in to use her eyes...I see black and blue now, she says I need glasses and its white and gold.

Actually, science says her rods and cones are not as dynamically enviromentally interfacing as yours....I blame my astigmatism for my love of gold.

Uh oh, your eyes are broken:(. How are you going to get your Ultimate Operator patch? What colour is Herman the German?

OMG I never thought of my operator status...not good. I better have this fixed by zero dark thirty. Herman the German is now cyan and magenta.

02-27-2015, 01:49 AM
I cant stare at it right now. My left eye keeps twitching.

02-27-2015, 05:00 AM
Blue and black. Do I need to see an eye doctor?

02-27-2015, 05:09 AM
I didn't see any change at all, does that mean i'm dead?

02-27-2015, 06:19 AM
It's not that it's supposed to change for you, but it does for some.

It's more about people swearing on their kids' lives that it's one colour while someone else says the same about the other colour.

I wonder how many divorce papers will now be filed citing "irreconcilable differences regarding #TheDress "

Some day your children will wonder: What did people talk about before #TheDress??
— Steve Zaragoza (@stevezaragoza) February 27, 2015

What color is that dress? I see white & gold. Kanye sees black & blue, who is color blind?

02-27-2015, 06:46 AM
BTW, colour me odd, but in the original post I see a blue dress with gold stripes (brownish gold at the shoulder, slightly blackish at the hips).

EDIT: I have a very bright, colour calibrated monitor.

02-27-2015, 06:49 AM
To further muddy the waters, it looks very different to me on differnet screens. On my PC laptop it looks white and gold right away, but on my iPhone it looks black and blue right away.

Here's what the text in an embedded tweet says:

"Your eyes have retinas, the things that let you interpret color. There's rods, round things, and cones that stick out, which is what gives your eye a textured appearance in the colored part. The "cones" see color. The "rods" see shade, like black, white and grey. Cones only work when enough light passes through. So while I see the fabric as white, someone else may see it as blue because my cones aren't responding to the dim lighting. My rods see it as a shade (white).

There's three cones: small, medium and large. They are blue sensitive, green sensitive, and red sensitive.

As for the black bit (which I see as gold), it's called additive mixing. Blue, green and red are the main colors for additive mixing. This is where it gets really tricky. Subtractive mixing, such as with paint, means the more colors you add the murkier it gets until its black. ADDITIVE mixing, when you add the three colors the eyes see best, red, green and blue, (not to be confused with primary colors red, blue and yellow) it makes pure white.

—Blue and Black: In conclusion, your retina's cones are more high functioning, and this results in your eyes doing subtractive mixing.

—White and Gold: our eyes don't work well in dim light so our retinas rods see white, and this makes them less light sensitive, causing additive mixing, (that of green and red), to make gold."

And this user says he turned his phone's brightness from low to high and saw the colors switching.

So give that a shot, maybe.

A hoax-like "scientific" explanation for why you see a blue and black dress and I see a gold and white one is circulating around Twitter, but who knows if it's true!

Possible future movie. Insulting Bad language, offensive image

Young woman discusses the dress. Decides pictures of cats are more important.

Wired's take on the dress (if you've read every post in this thread, then this is semi worth reading)

And of course, here's the dress on Amazon

I ordered this dress expecting it to be gold and white as in the picture but when I received it I found to my dismay that the dress was blue and black!

I ordered this dress and it's clearly black and blue from the picture but a white and gold dress came in the mail. DO NOT BUY!

This dress is why I have trust issues.

This dress ruined my life.

Just say no to the dress.

How many chameleons were killed to make this dress?

I don't know whether to buy black shoes or gold shoes for this dress

For anyone contemplating buying this dress, think twice - this is a complete con trick. The pictures of the dress on Amazon clearly show a very attractive blonde model wearing the dress and given the extortionate price, I was fully expecting that the girl would be included. Imagine my disappointment when a flat package arrived containing only the dress. For a couple of days, I assumed that the model would arrive under separate cover, but she never turned up. There appears to be no 'small print' anywhere on the page to inform me that the price shown is for the dress only and the matter is now in the hands of my solicitor.

I was running short on cash and attempted to pawn the lacy bits to buy food. Turns out I was fooled - they are not gold.

Where's the white & gold option!? I KNOW IT EXISTS SOMEWHERE IT HAS TO

This dress caused the snafu at the NFA

Psssst it's orange we have all been fooled!

Try as I might, I can only see it as white and gold.

All I see is white and gold.

Weird. First time I looked at it, I saw black and blue. After watching the video explaining the colours our eyes compensate for, it's now white and gold.

02-27-2015, 09:32 AM
Frig, my eyes went back to white and gold or some where in between.

02-27-2015, 10:31 AM
Ugh...precious minutes of my life, wasted.

Good thing I'm multi-tasking on the throne....which is white.........mostly

02-27-2015, 10:35 AM
Great, now I see blue and black. Stupid brain!

Hahaha I just saw that one. Wasn't sure how many people would get it though.

02-27-2015, 02:16 PM
It's a bad picture. Case closed. Ask the person who took it what color it is, then sock him for not understanding proper lighting techniques.

I understand now, i got the explaination on the evening news, it's blue and flesh color for me.

02-27-2015, 11:49 PM
It is black and blue.

Yes the actual dress is for sale and it is actually black and blue.

Of you don't see that you have bad eyeballs.

Stop mastering your bait.

I see black and blue. According to the video I'm not crazy.

The white and gold guys...you can use the far lane at the range...thanks.

Black and blue

02-28-2015, 02:58 AM
Looks blue and gold to me. Or black possibly depending on what that light was. I saw a picture earlier of a white mustang with gold stripes and I didn't get the caption that said still black and blue.

I had laser eye surgery. I have perfect vision.

White and Gold.

I had laser eye surgery. I have perfect vision.

Does nothing for colour blindness. I'd seen the photo a few times and always seen white and gold at a passing glance. Until I read the story here, now for the life of me I can't see anything other than black and blue.... The wife is an artist and interior decorator, very good with colours, she sees gold and white....arguments ensued.....divorce is now likely....;)
Interestingly enough, she says she was taught that men typically see less of the colour palette than women. Which might explain why I can't tell the difference between the sixteen different white paint chips she brought home....

Edit: oh FFS it's white and gold again....

02-28-2015, 10:35 AM
Fact: it's blue and black.

Eventually someone (sort of) settled it for real, by tracking down the dress online and revealing it is in fact blue and black (and upsetting the thousands of people who saw the dress as gold and white in the process).

Since #dressgate started trending, the £50 Roman Originals dress has totally sold out.

And now, hoping to cash in on the #dressgate phenomenon, Roman Originals have said they’re considering creating a white and gold version.

The question is, what colour will the white and gold dress look once its been created? Who knows.

I was listening to Black Sabbath last night when lyrics from Killing Yourself to Live (just after 4 minute mark) made me think of this image

"I don't know if I'm up or down,
whether black is white or blue is brown"
