I'm in the "shotshells are too bulky" camp. In the inevitable, coming soon, zombie apocalypse, I'd rather have few 500 rd boxes of 22 and a lightweight Marlin 795 than a mishmash of birdshot, buckshot, slugs, and a shotgun with 2 barrels and/or a few different chokes. I'd just have to find more 22LR; that should be easy, right?
