Ran into a good deal on a ATI strikeforce stock today so I decided to transform my SKS (chicom) into a poor-man's black rifle. Needless to say the gas tube cover pin and custom fitting of the receiver cover and several other parts was a pain in the butt, but I think it came out looking pretty cool. Just need to find a low profile scope or red dot. Also added a NC Star bipod on the bayonet lug and a Weaver picatinny rail receiver cover (yes I know you all warned me against this, but I must learn the hard way...) ;)

True but I am not prepared... No rain coat, no tarp for the ground, no windex to soak the barrel after shooting corrosive (esp when in the rain) - so yes I am wussing out lol

oh you soooooo funny!!!! lol

So I did make it out to shoot it afterall - stock preformed wonderfully - not so much with the receiver cover (as expected). Was fitted good and tight and magically got loose even with the rear retaining pin firmly in place. So when I got home I stripped her down again, cleaned it all, and put the stock receiver cover back on. JWire I am going to have to talk to your gunsmith about getting a proper mount installed.
Oh and the NC star bipod lost a spring - easy fix but annoying.
And that is that.
It never ceases to amaze me how much junk and crude accumulates from surplus ammo. I only shot 100 rounds and it was as dirty as if I had shot a whole case.
As for how the rifle shoots - I was just blasting an old pressure tank (with about 1000 holes in it already) - so I didn't really take note of my groupings - save that for another day.

Will do. Partly I think there is not much point putting alot of work into a $175 norinco sks though....

Sell the stock, replace with original, proper mount, wear big jacket when shooting.

After going through all the sks so called upgrades, and ad ons, I have come to the conclusion that youre far better off just leaving it alone, and appreciating it for what it is.

Short LOP, fixed by big winter coat.

I agree to some extent - I have had this rifle as stock for years and enjoyed it - I do like the stock upgrade alot though. As for the other mods not a big deal to take them or leave them for me. If I am gonna have a stock sks... its going to be one with really nice wood and leave it be. This norco sks had nothing going for it so I wanted to play gunsmith a little bit... :)

That was an NC Star bipod - but it broke after about 500 rounds. Got my money back on it at least lol.

Realy digging that stock set up but I would have tried the UTG 1 (It has the rail attachment1). As I find that it is more robust than NC Star stuff. As I too owned that model and after 2 days out in the woods it broke. But what I really want to know is what's up with the handguard???
Did you paint it or did you buy it black like that?

OutdoorPursuitsCanada

No paint - rifle components are stock and the ATI stock as it was out of the box.

cabelas.ca (http://www.cabelas.ca) is the first place that comes to mind, but, I'm pretty sure you can find ATI stocks everywhere :-P

ATI has a dealer locator in their homepage - there is quite a few smaller shops in Canada that carry the line.

I agree with keeping em stock, but only if ya find a really really nice one. Other than that theyre just hammers. So cut em up and hack em around til your happy...it'll still go bang and if ya dont hit what your pointin at youll probably scare it :)
Bloody good job it didnt rain during the various wars eh LOL....Just razzin ya I wouldnt lie down in a puddle either,,,too old.
