Gulu district haslaunched a drive to collect all the firearms which were given to people during the peak of the insurgency in northern Uganda.

The Chairman of the district security Committee also the RDC Gulu Chrissy Odoi Owori said this is the time to collect out all the military hardwares still the hands of wrong people.

He said these guns could have be given to the security organs or dropped by LRA rebels and to be taken back to right places.

The RDC said there are some Army deserters who are having guns illegally and other firearms which could have been smuggled into the district from the neighboring countries.

Odoi said there are other firearms which were given to the civilians illegally by security organs which pose a big threat to the society.

The Regional Police Commander North. Martine Amour said they are trying to find a way of curbing uncontrolled possession of guns among the population.

He added that all guns in circulation must have valid licenses as required by the firearms act.

The 4th Division Commander Col Innocent Oola said there is no war in the region and they need to focus on the community policy to maintain the current peace that the region has attained.

Col. Oola appealed to those who have guns illegally to voluntarily hand them back to the police or to the nearest security agencies before the deadline of one month has elapsed.

He said those will fail to meet the deadline which started on the 5th April 2012 shall be arrested and prosecuted.
