what sks sights do you guys use ?
I have a 54 Russian all factory irons but they are driving me crazy
sometimes ,with no rest it will do pretty tight groups around the bulls eye at 25 yrds
but rested it hits high and right no matter what I do WTF
I 'm shooting reloads w\123 grain bullets have of course torn it down
multiple times nothing is loose or out of align that I can see and it functions
flawlessly ,I am resisting the temptation to scope this rifle because I wanna
learn with irons

Maybe your sights are out but you're pulling the rifle when freestanding? Where do you have the bag when you're sitting at the bench? If it's resting on the barrel instead of the stock it could be putting you out a hair.... I benched mine, used the sight tool to set things straight and haven't had an issue since. And only one needed adjustment, the other two rang the 200 yard gong offhand nine times out of ten with Barnaul FMJ straight out of the cosmoline....

Also, some swear theirs won't zero properly without the bayonet extended, but I haven't noticed a serious difference....

yep something is out for sure but when resting on the forend only which is odd
seems to have the same amount of play as others I've seen in the store barrel wise
I have changed the gas tube cover to a vented one and its tight and added a longer buttstock piece
so its now at 13.75 LOP instead of as you know the factory 13 but its still shoots the same
I have used one of those caldwell rests with the up down turret on the front and bags as well
same affect

Might be the recoil is bouncing it off the front rest?
Instead of resting directly on the rest, lay your hand on the rest and put the forearm in your hand.
The softer rest might presvent it from jumping up, throwing the shot up.
Just a thought.

Ill give that a try too
I picked up one of those chamber laser bore sighters
was thinking that might help me figure out what is throwing the barrel out of line
when resting if thats whats happening but why does it hit high left all the time
you'd think it would jump around more Ill keep playing around
I only shoot 123 grain FMJ's and soft point reloads no steel core
allowed at the range it may do better with a heavier bullet

I don't own nail polish. Did you have to give an explanation why you were buying nail polish?

Are the groups from both positions similar-i.e. the group just shifts high and right? Are you shooting sitting off the rest or prone?

from sitting resting on the forend it will hit high right everytime about the same group size
sitting and holding free hand it will hit pretty much where you aim better groups
ive got the front barrel sight cranked over to the right ,will try with the bayonet out

if its shooting to a different point of impact from rested to standing there are only 2 textbook answers

1- problem with clearance in your stock to rifle fit
2- shooter is canting

I know the fit of the sks to wood is funny but as it has not been mentioned i would take a close look with the weapon apart to see if there is any odd wear areas or spots of obvious wood metal contact that is out of place.

"...but rested..." On what? Wood on wood will throw off the POI. Wood on steel is even worse.
Front sight is moved in the opposite direction you want the group to go. Don't think that's your issue though. Since it's ok off hand.
There's a front sight pusher tool available via Amazon.ca for $22.12Cdn for adjusting the front sight. $7.99 from alflahertys.com in TO.
SKS manuals are here. Note the need for the provided UN & PW. Sight adjustment, such as it is, is on Page 4. http://www.biggerhammer.net/manuals/
