View Full Version : How many BIG sporting rifles around?

Pretty much just gauging interest here, but Tys and I were kicking around the idea of a little funshoot next summer in kind of a safari theme. Few walk-up stations with stand-and-deliver scenarios to bag a big tusker or stop the charging lion.

Cartridge designations perhaps to start with a "4" or bigger?....or maybe allow in a few mouse-calibres like 375?

Perhaps it would even be a venue for the curious to pull the trigger on a big boomer, providing enough generous souls who would share their guns. After all, what could be more fun than watching your friend get walloped by a 470 for the first time? I always enjoy that.....;D

"...generous souls who would share their guns..." Isn't the rifle as much as it is the ammo. Depending on which .470, your .470 Nitro Express can run $10 + a shot. Out of a $13,000 rifle.
"...what could be more fun..." No argument there. snicker.

No 9.3's? I've been toying with the idea just in case the Whelen isn't enough oomph... Little bit of a drive though :p.

Noreen Bad News is an AR-like platform that you can get in 338 Lapua. Doesn't start with a 4, but energy on target from a 338 Lapua is likely higher than most things shy of a 50 BMG.

Haha....Okay, nice rifle to be sure, but I'm calling DERAIL!!!

We're going on safari....in the 1920's.......SPORTING RIFLES!!......beautiful wood and open sights and huge bullets.....

Yes, I guess 9.3's are relevant....and have to include 375 I suppose, as long as it ends with "H &H".......

Now I have an excuse to buy that Merkel double rifle in .470NE!!

I can loan you $10k, but you'll get cheaper interest with Visa.

45-70 starts with a 4, does that count?

A 70gr powder threshold might be a better standard.

I would definitely be intrested if I could get the time off when it comes up. I would also be willing to let others play with my 45-70

We don't exactly have water buffalo around these parts. The good old .270 will do quite nicely for most things.

I'd love a .458 Winchester on a Model 70.
