One of my friends would like to purchase a Russian made SKS and since he lives in a small town with no gun stores it will have to be a mail order purchase.

Basically just curious from what mail order companies you people have ordered from and did the companies have good service, was the rifle in decent shape, was it packed for shipping well, did you feel you paid a fair price. Any other info you feel would be important as well would be appreciated. Thanks.

Any of the sponsors shown above in ads is a fine place to start.
Aztech, wolverine supplies, and SFRC are the only ones I have personal experience with, they're great.

If you are worried about quality there are places that charge a little extra and will hand select one

I highly recommend HIGH CALIBER SERVICES CORP as it appears in the GOC Flagship Dealers section. This fellow is an SKS dealer and enthusiast. There is no better man to deal with regarding an SKS.

Send him a PM or email or call him.

I'm a huge SKS fan myself, so take my advice for what it's worth. They're the most undervalued guns on the market.

I agree with high caliber. Dave is great to deal with. They're shipping me a highly modified sks right now. Monte Carlo stock, ar mag conversion, chopped and threaded barrel, new sights, trigger job. Should be sweet!

Wow! I signed up because I am in the same situation!

Rural small town, only firearm dealer for 1000 miles only stocks things that are at the very, very high-end of the market and just not what I am interested in.

Thanks for the tips to all who have posted in this thread.

Other people that are great to deal with are Chris at Specter Arms and Martin at Corwin Arms. Not sure if either have any in stock right now though.

I have dealt with Martin at Corwin, excellent guy. Think you should always try to buy from a dealer on GOC, helps justify them advertising on here.

High caliber has been good to me always. here --> http://hical.ca/semi-auto/?sort=priceasc

there are other places that are good too, click on the suppliers above, like this for example http://www.firearmsoutletcanada.com/rifles/non-restricted/semi-automatic?dir=asc&order=price

one of those two links will fix u up for sure

I ordered one from Cabelas; if it is not new, it just like new. The only numbers that don't match are the magazine, and I suspect that they pin a whole bunch and then reinstall without matching. Came with cleaning kit, oilcan and stripper clips. Got it during the black Friday sale and saved a bunch, and got free shipping too.

Just to manage expectations OP, understand that whatever you get, and wherever you (or your buddy) gets it, they are service rifles. They were never stored in a fashion that would maintain a pristine stock wood, or the finish on the wood. There will be bumps and bruises. Also the vast majority of these rifles are refurbished, used, service rifles from the 1950's. (there are some Chicom exceptions and rarer Russian ones...but 99% of the Russian ones are refurbs).

I have found that inside of 100 yards these are accurate and fun to shoot, but that's about the reach of this platform. Moving man sized targets at 300m were impossible "Hail Mary's"...even 200m was very difficult and more luck than anything when I got hits where my POA was. (military rifle range on paper targets, I'm not talking about shooting people obviously).

You will of course hear from fellows that their Non-refurb 1945 Izzy, will hold 2MOA at 1000 yards ever since they welded an ACOG on the "dust cover"...That has not been my experience with these guns however.

They are great semi-auto carbines that shoot a good cartridge. Undervalued only because of the proliferation of them. Well made, dead simple, affordable to own and shoot...also a measure of being Canadian.
For our father's it was the Lee Enfield. You could have your citizenship revoked if you didn't own a $10 sportered Enfield and a crate of surplus ammo in the basement. For us the same holds true with the SKS. (actually, I think we're getting the better of the conversion. Our $200 is less than a 1950's $10 bill I believe.;D)

It's not as if for $220 your going to get a record breaking target rifle. I bought one just to have and figured it was a cheap piece of junk till I actually had one in my hands and took it apart and found out just how well they are made. Mine shoots not bad and straight down the center as bought with no adjustments. Just have to screw the front sight up a bit to lower it a couple inches and am good to go. And if all else fails I can't affix my bayonet and charge.

I've dealt with most the dealers mentioned in this thread and never had any problems.

Corwin many times also Wolverines many times and their customer service is second to none. Cabelas is good for a box store.

But if SKS is your thing. I can't think of anyone that has more after market and nice selection of Aluminum chassis than HiCal

I can appreciate a SKS for what it is and would just leave stock but that's me.

I got a Russian SKS from a buddy of mine. He has a property out by Caroline and his building out there burnt down. The gun was in the building at the time. He wanted to throw it out but I said I would take it off his hands. I refurbished the gun and it came out pretty good and must say at 200 yards it hits beer cans and that is using the original iron sights too. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161225/58719d8dc859263c33219147410daecf.jpg

Why the chopped barrel?Just to add the threads? I'm wondering how many like their AR mag conversion. And what is he doing to the trigger?
