I recently got an M14 shorty and the gas lockwas really loose. I replaced the flash hider and while I had it apart I filed oneside of the lock till it was in almost the correct alighnment and then banged it into place.
Very tight now.
Is this appropriate? As opposed to shimming.

Did you check the alignment of the gas port?

There's a good thread on M14forum that outlines the shimming process and checking the alignment of the gas port.

I'd see no issue with your method, provided that things line up inside.

I lapped one of mine as well but got carried away. I started getting failure to feeds. I obtained a replacement and now I need to find shims. :o

You guys know that on the Nork's you can flip them around and they will tighten up different???
As for taking a file to that area I would strongly reccomend against it.

Tried flipping it around and that made no difference. I didn't touch the gas block, just the lock, the piece that threads off and just took enough material off to get the job done. Have to go shoot her on days off and see if it made any difference.

The 180 did nothing

That sucks. At least shims are cheap. Although there are some guru's think if you shorten the gas lock it will seat the gas plug to deep into the gas system and can cause cycling issue's. Interesting to see the reasults from this. Please post back with the finnal reasult please.
