View Full Version : I need a new scope!

I have a Winchester model 70 7mm rem mag. The scope that is currently on it is about equal to going to Wal-Mart and duct taping a cheap pair of binoculars onto it (lol).
This is only a hunting rifle, and my ranges are anywhere from 50 yards to 600ish yards (across fields)
Now, that being said, I am also not a rich man, so I cannot afford a $2000-$3000 scope. My absolute top price would be approx. $700 including rings.

What would your suggestions be?

I have used everything but nothing very expensive. My favorite is a Leupold up to 9x. No need for long distance around here except at the gun range. I do prefer the 50 mm optics for the extra light gathering. I was only shooting maybe 50 rounds per year so the scopes never really got a workout with recoil. Never had trouble with any of them. Lots of options.

depends on how much you want to spend.

I just got a 3-9x40 scope off amazon for $39.99 and it seems ok.

You just missed a great sale Bushnell had. I have had good luck buying scopes on the marketplace here as well. For the money your looking to spend I would say a Vortex, just not the bottom end Crossfire line.

In your price range I'd look st something like a Leupold VX-2.

I took the 4-12x40 VX2 off my 7RM and replaced it with a 4.5-14x40 VX3 with B&C reticle.

I didn't need to upgrade but I wanted more x and the B&C reticle.

For what you have to spend I would go VX2 as ben suggested.

I bought a Nikon Prostaff last year, and have been happy with it so far.
Nothing fancy, but not real expensive either.
Turrets are zero-able, and the adjustments are positive and repeatable.

Remember that whatever you decide on it has to stand up to 7RM recoil and cheap scopes don't usually do that well.

I've had a couple of Prostaffs and wasn't overly impressed with either. The glass was good but I wouldn't trust them on a magnum myself. The Monarch 3 I had was a good scope and tough.

I have yet to jiggle a Leupold and have abused several. One VXII in particular and it still holds poa

Honestly, you'll probably be fairly satisfied spending $400+ on any of the name brands. Bushnell, Leopold, Vortex, Nikon, etc.... They're all pretty good once you get out of the low end stuff. My hunting rifles all wear Bushnell Elite or Vortex Diamondback HP. Except the old Parker Hale has a minty Bushnell Sportview 4x....just seemed fitting....

A monarch three 2.5-10x would suit the short range to near 600yrds.
I stick with nikon and leupolds personally.

To say it's "only a hunting rifle" and then say you could be making 600yrd shots, is a bit of a conundrum.

I would look for a used Zeiss Conquest. Glass is amazing and the eye relief will be appreciated on your 7mm. I love mine. They can be found for around $500.00 usually.

Ah the beauty of other opinions :)

I would rate the Elite as one of the best values around. Great light transmission, magnum recoil proof, tough and accurate.

I was too. And they have great warranty. But I've had to use it with two of the four Vortex products I currently own.

For what it's worth, Leupold has a similar warranty but I've never had to test it.

i would say buy the best leupold you can afford......
you should be able to pickup a vx-3i 3.5-10x40mm with cds (custom dial settings) for approx $690

the beauty of it is the custom dial options is that once setup you can have holdovers automatically visible and repeatable

quick video on cds custom dial.... if shooting to 600yds this is the system you want

I second this.

For 400-600yd shots, parallax adjustment is necessary. I use a Zeiss Conquest and my maximum range for now is 300yd.

You just missed a Bushnell 25 for 25 sale.

For 25 days they gave you a 25% refund for any scope purchased during the sale.

I bought a 6500 Elite and my son a FFP 6500 Elite.

He just got a refund cheque for $325.00 and mine will be for $250.00, great deal on great scopes.

I do wish I'd known about that....could've used a 1.5-4x or something similar.... Next time I guess, still haven't been let down by one of my Elites.

you still have a chance...

there is a $25 banner rebate and $40 trophy rebate until the 22nd.

not as good as the 25%...

It's a Trophy XLT on my muzzleloader that I want to replace :). Elite all the way!

In that price range of look at Vortex. I got my Strike Eagle 1-6 for +/- 600 with a cantilever base. Unconditional lifetime warranty is always nice insurance.

Depends on your budget. I prefer Vortex. I think Vortex is the best scope (https://shootingmystery.com/best-1-6x-scopes/) for the money on the market

I have three of the Nikon options - Prostaff 5, Monarch 3 and Monarch 5. I think the glass is very good on them and wouldn't hesitate recommending them though I do prefer the Monarch 5. The only thing I'm not crazy about is the BDC reticle. I would rather have a hash mark than the circles they use. Because of this the next scope will likely be another Sightron S-Tac for similar dollars to the Monarch lines

I concur with all of that. I even almost got an s-tac last time.

I have a 4-20X50 S-Tac and really like it. Nikon will lose out with me due to the BDC reticle they have. The scopes are good just not a fan of the reticle and the S-Tac is in the same price range.

Old school here ....
The Leupold 1 piece base is a good setup on the long action Model 70. Combined with a low ring and a Leupold Fixed 6x ...... sturdy, stable, and foolproof.

I have a Vortex now after trying to deal with Leupolds warranty on a 10 year old VXIII. Like the Leupold product, hate their Canadian product support.

I went in with the intention of getting that one.
I compared it with the similar Nikon, and thought they were awfully close.
To my eye the Nikon was a touch brighter so that's what I went home with.
Quite happy with it so far, and it's quite good in low light, but I'd likely be as happy with the Vortex.

my buddy got a Nikon Prostaff for his SKS, he didn't like it, wouldn't focus well for him, I never tried it but I'll give it a look through later, I'm house sitting for him

edit: buddy's scope is a Buckmaster not a Prostaff, it's OK but I don't think it's bright enough and was hardish to focus at 12x but might be my less than spectacular vision

I bought the same scope last spring for the same price. They are being discontinued. I called Vortex. They said that I still have the Vortex lifetime Warrantee. If they cannot fix it. They will give the higher up model. It is a nice rifle scope. I also like Burris scopes. They have a similar warrantee.

I am still waiting for my CZ527 to arrive. So the Vortex can be put on it. The picture is with the Burris, I bought it used.

I almost bit on that when I was in today, but managed to talk myself out of it with no real purpose for it. When I got home later I remembered I'll need something to put on the AR once I finally order a bolt carrier group to complete my build. Dammit. Have to drive right by there on the way home from work this week....we'll have to see how my willpower not to make any purchases until Christmas is paid off holds up.....
