What firearms manufacturer puts out the best single shot big game rifle in your estimation? I kind of like that one where you can change the barrels to get a different caliber, or even a shooty out of it!! But then there is that old #1....any thoughts?

Thompson's are cool.... the all ion one idea is neat for sure.... but I love the look and feel of the ruger.... there's just something nice and simple about a single shot....

The Ruger #1 is pretty damn nice, and much easier loading then a break barrel.

One day I will own a Blaser K-95. It's a beautiful looking rifle with claw mounts and switch barrel capability.

Problem with a gun like that is I wouldn't want to hunt with it! I'd be scared to ding it.

My hunting gear is more about reliablity.

What kind of money we talkin for that hideous firearm?

Now that's not to say I wouldn't spend a few thousand on some range toys, but I'm thinking custom, or a TRG, etc.

As for the OP's question, I've always liked the Ruger No. 1 as an inexpensive (relatively) single shot rifle. High quality and robust, IMO it's hard to beat.

The base model will run anywhere from $1500-$1800 if I remember right. That still has fine wood and an engraved reciever. And when you consider a #1 starts around $1000, that's really not that bad for a fine European rifle.

The Stevens 44 1/2 as made by CPA rifles is a beautiful rifle, strong action and a true "switch barrel", mine are in 25/20 Single shot and .218 Mashburn Bee, but can be chambered for higher pressure rounds.

A friend has a Ruger No.1 in .257 , it's a great little rifle.

I want a full stocked No.1 in .45-70 or 9.3.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you the Savage 219. The early models with no letter after the name, are incredibly simple to operate, very light, beautiful wood, gorgeous case coloring, available in 30-30, 12, 20, 16ga, .410, 22hornet and a few others. They are also very well made, and extremely accurate. The first pic is swiped from the webs, but is indicative of the case coloring, and the wood. the second is a 3 shot group at 100 yards with open sights from my own 219.http://www.hunt101.com/data/500/Savage_219_left_receiver.jpg
