I am so glad that Select Shooting decided to stay with Oxford Fish and Game club as the venue for their Annual Range Day as I really like the open layout of this range.

We arrived to a decent lineup of people and as we will see later on, it did get quite busy.

Returning exhibitors Black Rifle Coffee and the CSSA

And great to see my colleagues at High Capacity have a table this year…I picked up several copies of the two editions with my articles.

I also sampled Code of Arms new coffee. While Black Rifle Coffee uses proceeds to support veterans, Code of Arms Coffee supports competitive shooters…and they offered to sponsor 17 year old IPSC Grand Master Ryan Dobbs at the Code of Arms Golden Bullet Awards dinner at TACCOM.

Canadian Historical Arms Museum is also a returning exhibitor although this year we were not allowed to handle the guns. Still, after seeing Canadian Gun Vaults prohibition kit at TACCOM it was great to see a real Tommy Gun for comparison.

Last year I focused on precision rifles so this year I decided to start with handguns.

Lineup for the handgun range…

At least we had some cool scenery to admire while we were waiting

https://www.fototime.com/7AE2D1199F2C088/large.jpg

Quite busy inside!

https://www.fototime.com/853A7FA1CD7B981/large.jpg

I have skipped Smith and Wesson in my previous reviews so wanted to show them some love this time around lol. First up, the SD9, S&W’s entry level offering

https://www.fototime.com/7BCF9B1BC4C1A30/large.jpg

https://www.fototime.com/0C6E5549740EB1B/large.jpg

Shoots pretty well…a good bargain for under $500

https://www.fototime.com/B2E27E8DF55AEE0/large.jpg

Next the Victory Performance Centre .22LR…

https://www.fototime.com/32F59481A21645E/large.jpg

https://www.fototime.com/294C4558B544FBF/large.jpg

being a .22 it was super easy to shoot, as shown by this young lady (thanks to her father for permission to take the pic)

https://www.fototime.com/4C6948C7AB5B70A/large.jpg

Smokey ammo…looks good in pics imho lol

https://www.fototime.com/FEFCB3B2C7B69F8/large.jpg

https://www.fototime.com/B263D4D964F79C5/large.jpg

I really liked the super bright sights and I would say this gun had the best sights of all the ones I tried in the day.

https://www.fototime.com/3592FCAF78B856D/large.jpg

Meanwhile Tom shot the M&P and .357 revolver

https://www.fototime.com/5072FDD4C8CA89A/large.jpg

Next, the North Sylva booth for one of my favourites, the X95..in 9mm…I definitely want one of these and to take a course with Lovie, who I had the pleasure of meeting at TACCOM

https://www.fototime.com/2A8C6E7FD84B930/xlarge.jpg

https://www.fototime.com/6F0036C7FA7BD5C/large.jpg

https://www.fototime.com/B0B3032BE09E20E/large.jpg

https://www.fototime.com/43BE8D4A9252A98/large.jpg

Yup, definitely my favourite of the day.

As I mentioned in my TACCOM review, I intended to try the FN 509 here as I knew it would be on the
line. It shoots well but I would mount a red dot on it…those suppressor sights would take some getting used to.

https://www.fototime.com/76E8A11B122D7E3/large.jpg

https://www.fototime.com/26A264CA5A291A9/large.jpg

Also from North Sylva, Girsan

https://www.fototime.com/E4964942DFC0923/large.jpg

And Walther.

https://www.fototime.com/C6C1AE8A3A6FF39/large.jpg

I have heard so many positive things about the Q5 Match that I had to give it a try.

https://www.fototime.com/970268585AF4561/large.jpg

https://www.fototime.com/FC2167FF7578FAC/large.jpg

https://www.fototime.com/E92DCFCF5BB9C51/large.jpg

It was definitely nice but it did not “wow” me.

By contrast, Tom shot the PPQ and it was his favourite gun of the day…said he would “look up pricing” when he gets home lol

https://www.fototime.com/C9A1EF1E03E6C84/large.jpg

https://www.fototime.com/BFCB5BD5F390DDC/large.jpg

https://www.fototime.com/12DCDA2D183B429/large.jpg

The P1 was super fun but it would take me some practice to do speedy reloads with that heel mag release.

https://www.fototime.com/BF24EBAA0D21373/large.jpg

https://www.fototime.com/C8CAF5B0882690F/large.jpg

https://www.fototime.com/765DEF4C25CB154/large.jpg

Next up, Grand Power….

https://www.fototime.com/41BE9026670E1C9/large.jpg

i tried the Q100, which now has a flat trigger with a 3.5# release weight and a shorter reset than the original version.

https://www.fototime.com/FDB8358553AA8D4/large.jpg

https://www.fototime.com/6EC2D692095AEFD/large.jpg

https://www.fototime.com/FA4493F9D929DF6/large.jpg

And the X-Calibur Match, also a next generation model featuring a heavier steel dustcover for even greater muzzle rise reduction. …and I MUCH preferred this one. In fact, I liked this one much better than the Walther Q5 Match.

https://www.fototime.com/37B91C4BB93EC0E/large.jpg

https://www.fototime.com/8612CBE82FCA82C/large.jpg

https://www.fototime.com/E609EDC3DAD9744/large.jpg

The fluted rotary barrel helps with recoil management and it feels great to shoot.

https://www.fototime.com/9ABF86406106631/large.jpg

https://www.fototime.com/F1093F8C8059ABC/xlarge.jpg

At the end of TACCOM, Wolverine Supplies generously provided some demo guns for today’s event, one of which was a Bruger & Thomet GHM-9….this one was near the top of my list to try. Too bad I embarrassed myself by hitting the mag release instead of the bolt release lol (apparently I was not the only one to do so)…the bigger issue was the small size of the aperature on the rear sight. I would definitely need to mount a red-dot on this.

https://www.fototime.com/CA848887B55145A/xlarge.jpg

https://www.fototime.com/F859B222ACE3545/large.jpg

Next my biggest surprise of the show, the Freedom Ordnance FX-9! Zero recoil and super accurate (the great Vortex glass helped too), plus it uses Glock mags…next to the Tavor this was my favourite gun of the day..i would definitely buy one of these!

https://www.fototime.com/75E0ECE95167691/large.jpg

https://www.fototime.com/888E7FF4FF98268/large.jpg

https://www.fototime.com/4DEBE1B53A96A73/large.jpg

Last but not least in terms of handguns, Glock!

https://www.fototime.com/40B10C65775C8CE/large.jpg

The G19X was the most popular gun at their booth…while I have shot it before, I thought I would give it another try.

https://www.fototime.com/DD7126CF244F8E6/large.jpg

https://www.fototime.com/16FFD4D5DBB1379/large.jpg

https://www.fototime.com/1FD5BCACECE3A80/large.jpg

https://www.fototime.com/C0406D77EA150E6/large.jpg

I must say that I liked it more than in previous outings…perhaps because I have been shooting my Glock lately so am more accustomed to the trigger.

Other Glocks on the line (note the American Tactical Omni AR with polymer frame that I covered in my TACCOM review)

https://www.fototime.com/46EE34BBD702703/large.jpg

https://www.fototime.com/E5200F4F01261CE/large.jpg

https://www.fototime.com/ABF139EA9BC6649/large.jpg

https://www.fototime.com/8556BAE191C9BEA/xlarge.jpg

All done with handguns, we headed to the rifle range….which was also super busy

https://www.fototime.com/87E74CBB3FB9379/large.jpg

https://www.fototime.com/BB64889B6CD7594/large.jpg

https://www.fototime.com/FD05A0FF34768FE/large.jpg

Some of the guns available for us to try

https://www.fototime.com/91F05BEE0C8D7EB/xlarge.jpg

https://www.fototime.com/2B21340303CD9CE/xlarge.jpg

Again I wanted to start with Smith & Wesson.

https://www.fototime.com/E32070842C3CACB/large.jpg

https://www.fototime.com/17D8B55CBFE6267/large.jpg

https://www.fototime.com/8E68CFAA610547F/large.jpg

I watched Colion Noir’s video on the M&P 15-22 .22LR last night as I knew Select would have one on the line (thanks for putting out the list Select!)…he concluded that while an AR in .22 may seem silly, it is super fun to shoot and a great training tool…I concur! Once again, another gun I would buy!

https://www.fototime.com/A2D4FD6AF295893/large.jpg

https://www.fototime.com/18468C61BA70AF5/large.jpg

https://www.fototime.com/BB6CAE50FF856B9/large.jpg

https://www.fototime.com/4AA8B6D8269C308/large.jpg

As for the standard M&P AR, I wanted to try the one with classic furniture…while I like the look, I have really gotten used to shooting ARs with quad rails so I think I will stick to those.

https://www.fototime.com/087653E9AE505AC/large.jpg

Of course, S&W offers those as well..shown here with Tom and another guest.

https://www.fototime.com/B56074B4ACEF29D/large.jpg

https://www.fototime.com/5854D830311D2D4/large.jpg

I wasn’t planning to shoot precision rifles this time but they had the new Daniel Defense Delta so had to give it a try. Unfortunately, there were some issues with the gun, either it was over-heated of didn’t like the available ammo but the bolt had to be forced open after every shot so I only got one round out of it.

https://www.fototime.com/B42E6846478CD41/large.jpg

https://www.fototime.com/B59F9785EF6B3F5/large.jpg

Fortunately the Daniel Defense AR was functioning flawlessly and I really liked it!

Not that I had the time to look back, but the handgun range never felt as busy as your line picture suggests. Then again, I also had 91 shoot tickets in my pocket after the event. So what do I know? lol.

Hate to be that guy RL1 but, the pictures of Tom are of him shooting the P99 not the PPQ.

Where is the bolt release on the GHM-9? I was in such a hurry at the end of the day, I just used the charging handle. I also found the sights on the thing too high for me. But then again, I was also trying to get a cheek weld on the stock... oops.

Thank you once again for letting us try those. I'm going to save my heart and not look up the retail cost of that Combat Master.

Yeah, i'm socially awkward that way. Especially in groups and in the presence of greatness. Besides, you declined to give me a hug. ;)

Yup, 100% P99. Although, interestingly, if you could hold the P99 magazine in the PPQ, it will feed. Duck tape it flush to the grip and you might get more than a single shot with it coming out a little. Ask me how I know, lol. I really hope I only did that the one time and not with the poor left handed guy too.

Oh that makes sense. I can see how people might have mixed that up.

Yup, didn't need to know that. Least I'm not tempted anymore. Thanks. :P

oh i just spoke to Tom..i was confused because he did shoot the PPQ but that was later in the day...he is usually very good with model names and numbers and knew that it was the P99 that he liked so my bad
