What would it be?

Given the full range of Soviet Bloc rifles regardless of Canadian Law: what would you pick?

I'd love to have myself an AK-74 setup:

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x21/clutterbugg/84%20Izhmash%20AK-74%20clone/ak-74n_left_and_right_profile.jpg

Or ya know, test the limits with a VSS Vintorez or a PKM :D

Hands down, I would take an SVD Dragunov. I would shell out lots of money to get my hands on one of them!

You can't deny how sexy this rifle is:

After that.. I wouldn't mind taking a peak at the VSS Vintorez (such an interesting rifle, haha), but a solid 2nd pick would be a classic AK-47.

X2 on the SVD, 2nd choice would be an AN94.

See as a kid introduced to guns through videogames: the SVD was never a favorite for me. Probably because I didn't know how to use the reticle (still don't) and that always threw me off.

I'd love spend a day on the range with one of the weirder Soviet guns, the Bizon:

A 1945 non refurbished fully matching unissued SVT 40. Or M91 #1 @ the Tula Museum. Or Hayha's M28. But that last one's not a red rifle I guess.

Am I weird?

Okay I've seen this pic a few times. Can anyone explain to me exactly how the rock in mag could possibly work with this craziness?

Guessing here. Looks like the mag well is quite tight, maybe they insert straight up? The release is opposite, maybe they rock in opposite? Is it even an AK mag? The ejection port on these is in quite a curious place as well.
I thought these came out in the '60s and were "ahead of their time" which is usually code for "really fricken complicated"

As for your original question, mag slightly offset in relation of the pistol grip would be my guess.

47.

Fired a few in FA down in the states and they are very nice firearms.

Built dead simple, and rugged as hell.

If I could get any Commie rifle, the AK would be it.

I don't know who decided the Galil was a "red rifle" but it has a lot to offer:

The VSS (Russian: Винтовка Снайперская Специальная, Vintovka Snayperskaya Spetsialnaya or "Special Sniper Rifle"), also called the Vintorez ("thread cutter"[1]), is a suppressed sniper rifle developed in the late 1980s by TsNIITochMash and manufactured by the Tula Arsenal. It is issued primarily to Spetsnaz units for undercover or clandestine operations, a role made evident by its ability to be stripped down for transport in a specially fitted briefcase

For sure an SVD but that being unattainable my next red rifle will probably be a CZ 858 in 223 or I should say my next different red rifle since SKS's are always liable to follow me home or order themselves at any time.

There is too many to list. I have always been partial to sniper/DMR rifles. The SVD is a given.

The Romanian PSL

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h103/feldmarschel/pslbi2.jpg

The Zastava M76, which I find interesting for its cross-bred design. AK platform chambered for the 7.92x57 Mauser round.

http://img8.imageshack.us/img8/2227/dsc0525r.jpg

An other interesting rifle by the Yugoslavians. The Iraqi Zastava/Al-Qadissiya Tabuk. It is not technically a sniper rifle as it is chambered for the x39 round.

Any red rifles?

my list:
SVU-A
VSS
AA12
Saiga 12 gauge shortys
any krinkov type
a bison

And the one i really want is the CZ-805 bren, with all the caliber exchange kits.
not quite really red anymore, that czechoslovakia/ czech and slovak republics, aren't red, but still the excellent service rifle, IMO.

The production and importation of Valmet 5.56, 5.45 and 7.62x39, 7.62x51, 7.62x54 non-restricted rifles in canada. ridiculous the prices for the ones that are here.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. What was the quote I heard? "7.62x39: when you need to throw bullets like a football" (accompanied by an image of a heavy arc). I've got more accurate rifles, which is moot because I'm a mediocre shot.

That said, I wouldn't want to be on the business end of one.

Really...
Well that depends if we are talking about hitting paper or real targets 300 meters or less :p
As shown buy this photo 300 meters or less a body sized target the drop is not much but after that well ya the 223 stays more accurate but packs little punch were as a 06 keeps up the same punch as the x39 at closer range but stays more accurate and also there is a reason why people are looking at other rounds like the 300 black out because of the versitility of shooting sub sonic rounds in the semi-auto platform.
http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r169/jamiecarrrocks/comparison3.jpg
Also can your 22 pack a punch :p
