View Full Version : I wanna set up a real long range shoot. But

02-07-2013, 10:06 AM
Hello everyone

Well the notion struck me that there are various shoots the go from 1000 up to one mile !! Well I want to upstage this and have a shoot that will wring out all the big boomers out there. I have access to the steel for a shoot of this size but haven't been able to find an area. So I am putting out a call to the shooters of Alberta to see if anyone has an area where we could hit 2400yds or more. I would think that someone will know of an area that this could happen . I have no problems doing the leg work to secure permission and ask people . I just need a direction to go. Something central Alberta would be best . But I would think that a shoot of this kind of distance would draw people from all over . So if anyone might have an idea of an area. Send me a pm and we can work on gettin it up and running .

If you find it I will have to show up.

A fellow chey tac owner. Not many of us around

Come to BC...
Sir Steve we can shoot mountain to mountain top.
So much fun as the cross winds cause the bullet to be pushed around so much and with great glass it is so much fun watching them plink off the metal.

Posted out of interest.....want to go and learn to shoot outside of 100 yrds!!!!

I'm not trying to be the fun police, but I am curious.

Can you go on crown land and do some long distance shooting at targets, lets say, in the foothills where nobody else is around? Reason I ask is because I have worked in places where literally, if you get injured, you will probably die. But, maybe I'm a pussy, but I just don't want to go out to those areas shooting in the rare occasion some officer happens to be going through the area or some helicopter spots me or something.

I know I've found a few hill tops with spent casings on them, just not really sure the legality. Maybe I'm too paranoid.

Either way, I'm interested if anyone knows a place. I know of a few that might work, just don't want to be the one that gets everyone in trouble. lol.

I look for areas that are as contained as possible ! I have a couple spots where we shoot down a dead end lease road. Then we know that no trucks will be coming out , if there are cut lines crossing the road I will flag tape them with signs saying that we are shooting . It's just a matter of being smart and controlling as many variables as you can! As for being injured and dieing that could happen any place , any time

I could get you 3800 yards I believe, though 3200 would be more practical. With another 1.5-3 km of empty space behind the target. The only stipulation is you have to do it before seeding, after harvest, or from an elevated stand with an elevated target. I also get to shoot whatever guns you bring :) I'm also in the middle of nowhere, Manitoba. Though WestJet now flies to Brandon, which is only 45 minutes from me!

01-14-2015, 09:08 PM
Well now this steps up the game by a huge margin I might be able to get a few guys together for a late sept shoot ,

Holly thread revival batman. 2013 jump to 2015. My 338LM has yet to make a debut. I need more ice to be able to shoot 3kms. Targets out to 535 yds and 1500 yds. Hurry up chargemaster.
You have a new gun build going on Steve?

01-14-2015, 10:15 PM
Nothing new Hughie. Just really wanting to stretch the legs on the cheytac and the snipetac and those numbers really sound appealing lol

01-15-2015, 08:24 AM
Jack pine. I know a route in there to shoot hill to hill. Goes a distance inside 1500m ish. We're both from spruce so I can show you. However it's a comm graze land so you would have to book us being there as it's an event with a group of people. Also in the spring/summer cows graze and basically have the right of way so if you plan to shoot a in a certain quadrant but you see cows as well then cow wins lol.

Currently I have a spot that's good for 2600 yds and another that's good for 2100 m and yet another that's great for 1300 m . Finding the magical 3km + has been the issue for me this last year

01-15-2015, 09:40 AM
Well come on out to Manitoba, where the land is flat and empty, and the post shoot beer is cold. Also, that should have been meters in my last post, not yards.

When you are shooting ultra long range, how much of a safety zone behind do you need/want?

01-15-2015, 09:57 AM
All things considered equal Id like to see an additional mile safe zone behind . This would be more then enough to cover the bases and be safe.

01-15-2015, 10:05 AM
Excellent. Where I am thinking, there is well over a mile before any built up, abandoned farm yards.

01-15-2015, 10:15 AM
Very cool will have to work this out and try to make it happen !

01-15-2015, 10:16 AM
The template for 338 up to 50 bmg was nothing for 4.5 kilometers behind the target. That's what a search in 2007 turned up.
Some good spots around here, the issue is getting the 4X8 sheets of steel up to the top of the mountain without having a chopper. I guess at 3kms even a 10 gauge steel would be sufficient. See the hits really good too. hmmm

01-15-2015, 10:30 AM
The template for a certified range has 338 set at 6322m and 50 bmg out to 7216 m . These are very overrated distances in my opinion as this would require a N/D at a 45 deg elevation

As to the plate the 3/16" plate Dmay has set up has good dents in it from anything that has hit it but no pass through as far as I know to date . Dmay would know better if anything has gone through

01-15-2015, 06:21 PM
I'm gonna do some scouting around the Tumbler Ridge area this summer. Bet I can find 2000m easy.

01-15-2015, 08:17 PM
Well get on it young man!!!!!!

01-15-2015, 08:25 PM
Dmay stuff is higher grade than plain mild steel plate. Very few holes in it from a mile, except for the 50's. I'm smiling as I type this remembering the fun times!! 1 mile target made from Dmay's 3/16th inch plate.

01-15-2015, 09:05 PM
I remember that day and recognize some hits on there

01-16-2015, 05:20 PM
Id take the barret 98 out for that

01-17-2015, 12:58 PM
Well get on it young man!!!!!!

Gotta wait for the spring thaw. LOL. Seeing as I don't own snowshoes at the moment (I know I know, "Get on it young man!") or a snowmobile such scouting is a dry season activity unfortunately.

Flying High get in touch with the Chinchaga bullet man in Peace River. He know lots of spots.

01-27-2015, 08:38 PM
Hey anybody see hits at 2000 yards on steel. Or is it a drive to target to check? I'm not sure if I will be able to see out to 2000 yards with the nightforce 5.5-22X56. Jerry had a video where the rocks they shot at made a puff when hit. Mountains side rock shoot, hmmm.

01-27-2015, 10:04 PM
I can see hits at 2100 and at 2600 with my NSX Hughie . Smaller bullets could be hard but 338 stuff is easy

01-28-2015, 09:52 AM
I think it will depend on the state of the target. The 2600 yard hits we spotted were because of the Tigrr-inspired formula of poor quality paint thickly applied to rusty target steel. Hits were surprisingly (to me) easy to spot.
The 50BMG marks on that particular target were about 5" big...
Now Steve, your quality-painted AR500 targets may not be so easy at those ranges?

01-28-2015, 10:04 AM
I have seen the hits on my steel out to 2100m with the 408 and 338 , but I normally paint them red also. If they were white I am sure hits would show better contrast

My frozen pond is getting safer to travel on. Soon as Peter gets a RCBS ChargeMaster to me it is a go. 2300 yds is a possibility. 1600 without leaving my yard. LIG

johnny boy

I was bored so I stripped the .45 ACP to its bare bones and tapped it up and brought pieces of it to the powder coating shop and customized a bronze on the slide , hammer, trigger, slide release and through pin !!! I like it plus it's a little more durablehttp://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/15/04/07/625c522313aecf4c9165255d7984bd32.jpghttp://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/15/04/07/c71bc14590b4a97dbe558d765c42b4a5.jpg
