Savage Model 25 Walking Varminter in 223.

Why? DBM & a 3lug bolt so it should be a short lift, small action built for the small round, and fairly lightweight.
And because the mossberg mvp is no where to be seen in Canada as far as I can tell. Plus I trust this will be out of the box accurate enough for myself.

I think you have to, too. Because reasons.

Proprietary mag? Maybe a chance for bigger ones?

lone-wolf

proprietary magazine, yep. Probably nothing bigger available, but it's a bolt action, so I'll live with it.
Was thinking a second howa, because of the dbm kits available for them, but I already have one in .308 and would like to see how much better the 3lug bolt design is vs the howa's standard 2 lug.

any thoughts on the Weatherby Vanguard Axiom?
What's not to love? :)

If you stained the stock brown and stuck it in a tassled rawhide scabbard, no one could tell...?

I was thinking bipod 50mm scope and snow camo...

I have ( or should say had as my GF has claimed it as hers) a 25 light weight varmiter in 223 and I'm very happy with it when I'm allowed to shot it the accu trigger leaves very little to be desired and the price tag was a big plus also

Doesn't even fold!
I think the barrel is free floated though.

I'd like to say more about the model 25, but I think it'll be a month or more before I get one. Seen 3 yotes so far while vac trucking in firebag, and more ravens then I can count.

Would like to buy a Walking Varmiter in 223 as my first Varmint rifle. Just need to find one in stock somewhere first.

Cheers

I almost had the walking varminter in 17 hornet but the rifle was sold 2 days before I called. Dangit!
I waited till today to find out if anyone on PEI stocks ammo for it, they sure do, but the rifle is sold.
Now to decide if I should buy a new one in 17hornet(and probably wait a while) or one in .223(hopefully no wait)

The mossberg mvp should show up for sale next month according to my sources...

I broke down and bought another Axis...only to find out that Bob got a promotion and doesn't have time to build me a stock...

What a let down... :(

So I called my local gun shop, inquired if they have a rifle in 17hornet(figure a savage 25 of some kind)

They did! But it was sold this morning, A savage 25 walking varminter, the dang rifle I want. Bullocks.

What about the new .17 wsm? It is supposed to be a serious killer at 3000 fps and won't burn out the barrel with frequent plinking.

Not reloadable, and for a small calibre, I rather have the velocity for the increase energy that comes with the 17hornet.

I think you need a Bushnell TR-44321568 with multi-phase parabolic imager. You should look for one with the wide spectrum sub-space attenuator. Best for tribbles.

Have you considered the Model 25 in Ruger .204? I don't own one but a friend asked me to reload some rounds for him for a model 25. I shot a 5 shot group at 100 yards that was a one holer. I was totally impressed with this rifle. It is reloadable, the model you want, and would be good for what you want to do, judging from your comments. Just a thought.

If it's not .17hornet, I'm going for a .223 as I want a common calibre + I have ammo for it already and I'm set up to reload it.
I'm looking at used rifles, a browning Abolt looks good right now, but the newer model ABolt(3) will have a proper detachable box magazine and still has the short 60degree bolt lift.
So I may end up waiting.

The again, I think I will take a trip to the local gunshop and may end up coming home with something.

Oh yes, gun shop was a bust.

It's mine, the scope will probably be for sale as it's overkill for my use/skill, a simple 3-9x works for me.

Nice scope too, maybe getting rid of it, you say....

Gotta try the scope out first, never even seen such a high end optic

Thanks for the heads up guys, the rifle should be shipped today. Coming from Ontario it might even get to me by the end of the week.

SHHHHH! No, no, lone-wolf, that scope is garbage, I'll take it off your hands.....who wants a Leupy 20x for shooting varmits? Way too much scope, why see individual hairs at 300 yards? Takes the fun out of it. Here, I'll trade you for a NcStar QD Tactical 4x w/laser. Way more challenging shooting. You pay shipping.

Seriously man, that looks like a wicked scope, I mean, I call dibs if you hate it....;)but I'm thinking you won't hate it.

When I find myself in that situation I start reloading for the new rifle. Got some loads in mind? Vmax bullets are great on gophers and ground hogs. Might help take your mind off of the wait.

lone-wolf
03-06-2013, 03:18 PM
I'm holding off reloading till I get paid for my su16 that I sold. Money from that will equal a RCBS chargemaster(and a couple other goodies)

I got some 60gr & 55gr Vmax bullets. I'm hoping the 60gr ones do well.

Judging from the weather and the snow on the ground(warming up + lots of snow down = mudsville), it'll be a while before I can sight it in.
I should try and get my truck going, and get a little messy while the mud is around.

The laminated one looks great, on the one with the plastic stock, the back of the bolt looks really bulbous....why these instead of the model 10/110? I know that the 110 models are switch barrels as well?

You know what's meaner? An american hunter was in NFLD recently with a .308win version of the mossberg MVP. So there was one in Canada! Probably went back to the states with him.
