View Full Version : Couple knives from Afghanistan...translation anybody?

My last day in country I was walking through the markets at one of the larger camps on my way to grab my kit to leave. I had been looking for something to bring home to my brother, ran out of time and was on the way out when I spotted these two. They have matching carvings, they were pretty heavy and felt suprisingly solid. I only had a few minutes to get back to our shacks. I managed to find out the shopkeeper was a trader from Mazari Sharif, the knives were made from metal from a russian tank and they were going to run me twenty bucks. The shorter one is about 7 inches and the longer one is around 9. I was in a hurry and never thought to ask the guy what they said until after I left. Thought some knife people might find these interesting...and maybe know somebody who knows Dari a little bit.

I don't know any Dari but they look like nice souvenirs. And thank you for your service to Canada.

very cool souvenirs. i love tools with a history behind them. the fact they're made from metal off a russian tank is incredible. :)

Thanks Awndray!! I never thought to try and hunt through Ebay looking for something similar. The longer message reads "Balkh Afghanistan" and the small horizontal one just reads "Balkh" as far as I can tell from other ads. According to the interweb, Balkh is a settlement near Mezari Sharif dating back to 500 BC with some pretty cool history. It's also home to the "Balkh Trading Company" which trades goods in Kabul city. Appreciate that a lot, thanks everybody! ;D
