Pretty Versatile for Southern Ontario anyways.

I'm all in favor of the 30-06, mlehto I'm a big of the 243 as well, some would argue that is to light for moose but I disagree , and she's wicked for deer, & almost anything under the sun in Alberta with proper shot placement.

Yeah, I would go with the 30-06 for Bear and Moose, but the .243 is seeing more use for sure.

That said it is the 12 gauge that sees the most use. Damn Southern Ontario shotgun only season. ;)

Mine is the 30-30

Can't go wrong with the 30-30. Have you see the Hornady 160gr LEVERevolution ammunition?

http://media.midwayusa.com/productimages/large/775/775263.jpg

Supposedly has a better "ballistic coefficient delivers dramatically flatter trajectories" than normal 30-30 rounds, as well as flying 250fps faster and 40% more energy. Pricey thought for a 30-30 round. I think it's about $1.70 per round.

I have a few favorites...depending on the job at hand...
but if I had to pick just one,it would be the 250-3000 or 250Savage if you prefer. Fast enough for dogs but big enough for most other critters.

Pistol - 9mm - it's just more pleasant to shoot...could be because I have a pistol that *fits me* so very well, that I am very accurate with it.

Rifle - .223. I know it doesn't do *everything* but, again, pleasant to shoot, easy to find components, can be used in a wide variety of situations.

Also a big fan of 6.5x55.

Well I would have to say that aside from the amount of powder that the burns the 338 LM AI is turning out to be one of my goto rifles but other then that 6.5x284 is the real goto caliber in my safe

For me the 50/90 Sharps will always be my favorite, followed by the 45/70, either way the 550 grain bullets hit with such authority it's hard to go back to my younger days of Hi-vel magnums.

My little adjusted Ruger 77 in 308win and my gone pa's Schultz $ Larsen 308 Norma Mag.
And new to me last fall the 358win.
I have a sneaky suspicion that the Ruger is going to have fits of tears this season.

I would have to say the .375 cal.

21" barreled T/C Contender carbine in 375JDJ = 260gr Accubonds @ 2300fps

21" barreled Rem 700 LSS in 375RUM = 260gr Accubonds @ 3020fps & 350gr TSX @ 2450fps

I am also looking into a medium velocity .375 cartridge have not decided which one yet wildcat or factory leaning towards a 376 Steyr goal would be 260gr Accubonds @ 2600fps.

I think that was the basis for the .338 Marlin Express,
which looks really attractive.Too bad components aren't

If I'm close enough, and I have a rest, I'll try for a head shot. They just don't run away if you get them in the brain box. Then again...with a 300 win mag, they don't run very far when you hit them in the chest either. :)

for hunting i like my 7mm Rem Mag. coyote to black bear with no problems. even moose and elk will drop with good placement and a heavier bullet.

i like my .22LR as well for small game.

I say .22 LR for all the reasons already mentioned, but I am also very fond of the .308 Win., 6.5x55mm, .303 British and .375 Winchester.

Oh, and of course .45 ACP and .44 Rem. Magnum. The .38 Special is cool too.

Have a 2.5x Savage in a Stith mount on her...
Between that and my 250-3000 I've never owned a 22-250...

My favorite right now is the 510 Wells. Mostly because it is my first custom rifle and is built to my exact specs. I have not had it long enough to shoot a deer so with any luck this fall it will get some meat. Before that my fav was 460Wby. A few years ago it would have been 416 Rigby as I hunted with one for 6 years or so and shot my biggest White tail and moose with it. The 416's put a lot of meat in the freezer but as you go bigger in recoil it becomes an addiction and you must get bigger guns till you reach your limit. I have no idea what to do next as anything bigger than 50 costs way more for an action.

338 Lap Mag for its long range capabilities and the 270 WSM for its versatility, and i have to add that if I didnt handload my own shells I would most likely choose something like the 30-06 or 3030 just because of the price of ammo.

I have hunted with a 270 win for about 25+ years. Shot lots of deer and a few moose with the 270 win. I have a load that I have used since I started reloading for it. The 270 win seems to
work me. It's not that I haven't tried anything else, I have 30-30s, 270 win,7x57 , 30-06 7mm rem ,300 win mag,45/70 marlin,303 brt,7.62 rus, and have owned 270 wsm,338 win mag.

I'm stuck on .308. I like the shorter action, the low recoil, the knock down power and the variety of bullet weights. Now that being said I haven't decided if I want a xbolt in 308, 270 or 270WSM. For plinking and light duty game, its the .22; no question. Cheap, easy to maintain, bullets can be had anywhere, deadly accurate.

For getting serious; 30.06. Bullets again readily available; with good knockdown power and legal for the big stuff up here.

Right now, the 30/30 serves as bear/animal defense; however when I get the money the Henry 45/70 will take over that role. I want the BIG hole in the bugger; with lead going through the skull; if need.

An example of a highly intelligent hunter/shooter, as nothing beats a good ,338WM for all-around BC uses. I now just load 250 gr. bullets, NPs, ABs, SGKs and HILs in the currently six fine rifles so chambered that are in my two safes. I have never seen an animal lost after any decent hit with this combo and I do not find the "kick" too bad, actually, I really don't notice it most of the time.

These two, loaded with good bullets, are also very high on my list and I cannot think of a better combo for the serious BC-AB hunter, especially in tuned older Brno and the fine newer CZ-550 rifles. I have all of these, in good synthetics and the "shootability" and low recoil for the "thump" you get makes them just excellent for beginners, smaller women and even ancient geezers like me.

7 rem mag is a kitten too shoot.
MUCH rather shoot it than a 300 win mag.

I should have specified my "beast" comment...

I mean that it should decimate most that cross its path... It has great ballistics/knock down power/ammo isn't atrocious ... It gets hugely high marks in all important categories...

I'll take the aught six over the .308 any day.... and yes .... you need a .223.... If you like the quarterbores you should look at trying a.257 Roberts, .25-06 or a 6.5x55 .... All dreams to shoot....

Based out of the calibers that I currently own, the .270win is my favorite. Ever since I started handloading, the variety in bullet grain and types has widen the versatility of my .270.

When I finally get my pre-64 Winchester 94, it's going to be 30-30 because that's what that rifle was originally built around and because of price, availability and general overall versatility.

I used to be all about bigger/faster/stronger for everything in life, but now that I'm closing in on 40 (37) I seem to have mellowed out.

I used to drive a massive Dodge Ram 4x4, I used to have a Kawasaki ZX10R that could do 300 km/h, and I used to think 30.06 was king.

Now, though, I just find that I don't have fun shooting it. I have a Browning BAR with a Leupold VX3 (both silver), and at the range I find myself wanting to just get back to the smaller cals, especially in the prone when it's pounding the top of my shoulder. From the standing it's better, but obviously accuracy sucks. I should probably get a shooting bench of some sort, I guess.

Anyway, back on topic, between my Mossberg MVP and upcoming Daniel Defense Mk18 (as soon as the tan CeraKote ones start selling in Canada), it is 5.56mm that I enjoy firing the most now.

Even 22LR is a lot of fun, but in my Remington 597 with a red dot, and in my Ruger Bearcat revolver.

I'm not sure what is happening to me. Either my body is brewing a higher estrogen to testosterone ratio and I think differently, or now that I have kids I just think differently, but I don't care anymore.

Smaller is just fine by me; there, I said it.

I am no different.... I still think .30-06 is king, I love shooting my 375 h&h .... but for a day out at the range I always turn to my .223 or .17 hmr..... bang away all day on the cheap and don't go home with a sore shoulder.....

All of the basics of shooting stay the same and when I need to reach out and smack something with th elarger cals I don't have any issues..... why punish your shoulder and your wallet for nothing?

Around here I pack a cz550 in 9.3x62 shooting 286 grain partitions behind a compressed load of RL 17, its about at my shoot well/ recoil threshold and I wouldnt want or need anything more.
I would prefer to pack a 30-06 ( personal favorite ) but the size of the local brown furry buggers and the numbers of them have me reaching for the 9.3 now that my eyes and ears arent as good as they used to be.

Favorite flavours seem to vary as guns waltz through the door. Right now I'm having a mild obsession with the 35 Whelen....and Scotch. Last few years it's been the 30/30 and 257 Bee, 300 Win mag before that, then 308, 270, etc..... If I had to pick an absolute classic that I always return to however, it'd be the first calibre I ever humped into the deer woods, the grand old 303 Brit. There's just something about it, and I seem to always have three to six of the rifles on hand at all times, the ratty old sporters bring back fond memories and who can hate a full stocked SMLE? And with a safe or two full of guns, the old twenny-too never fails to put a smile on my face either

I am surprised that I haven't replied to this thread yet, so here goes.

My favorite Caliber has changed a few times over the years. Being a hunter first and target shooter second I think a more appropriate question would have been what is your favorite caliber for a type of game species you hunt or what is your favorite target shooting caliber. However, in keeping with the subject of the original question I would have to pick the 6.5x55 Swedish as my favorite caliber.

I hate these questions. As I am mostly a plinker, I'm going to say the .30carbine - fun little cartridge.

7 years later and I will say the answer is still the same, the .22wmr gets an honorable mention though.
The 308win is my favourite for hunting applications.

6.5x55 Swedish Mauser. With .204 Ruger being a close second.

I agree with 6.5 x 55; can use it anywhere in Ontario; will kill anything in Ontario, and with heavy bullets; out performs the 6.5 Creedmore. Unfortunately not as popular here as in Europe; but lots of 6.5 bullets to choose from when home-loading! What more does one need!!!

I made the mistake of selling my .17 hmr to a friend when I bought a .17 hornet. That hmr is a laser but I can’t wait until I start hitting gophers with the hornet. Time will tell which is my fav.
