I was searching through the Soviet Bloc Rifle area and the only pic thread for SKS was not updated since summer 2012. So I thought I'd start the "Official SKS Pic thread" Here are two of mine.

Up first my 1952 Tula SKS with my authentic 1967 ChiCom SKS Chest bandolier- holds 220 rounds of 7.62x39mm on stripper clips..."The Viet Cong special"

http://img580.imageshack.us/img580/7683/86009510152566890450697.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/580/86009510152566890450697.jpg/)

Uploaded with ImageShack.us (http://imageshack.us)

My next one a 1954 Tula SKS, modified with a TAPCO stock, 5/20 mags, CAA cheek riser and butt pad, scout mount rear sight mount and a 4 Retical R/G D4B. Accurate, hard hitting and in my opinion not "too much" done to it.

http://imageshack.us/a/img29/6231/dscf3620p.jpg

http://imageshack.us/a/img716/9346/dscf3618w.jpg

It still remains relatively light.
Hopefully this thread will get a "sticky" and we will see what everyone else has been doing with the SKS.
Cheers

I don't own an SKS anymore, but for your viewing pleasure, my former rifles...
My last Yugo m59, a beauty but wasn't being used so I sold her.

My first SKS, a chinese military. Except the stock, I believed the quality was on par with the yugos. The pinning job on the original magazine was superb, nothing welded, there was a rivet you could not see in the spring that blocked it to 5rounds. I wish they still pinned the SKS rifles like that, I never seen another like it.

You should try the scout mount for your optic. That Tapco rail never worked for me either.

Hard to get two rings onto that little base though! Maybe an offset mount would do it, but then you're getting into a pretty pricey space for the rifle.

Maybe a cantilever mount would work with the scope and the scout mount. I've seen them for around $50....but then adding in the scout mount over $100 I see your point about price. Maybe best to stick with the irons if $ is the issue...But a guy who can afford a Tavor...whats a $150 bucks?

The real question is "What's a $150 spent on SKS parts when it could be spent on ammo to feed the Tavor?" ;)

If you want more specific let me know.

Very nice pictures, good light! Very rich looking stock, I like those dark red ones.
Does the muzzle break help with accuracy? It's a neat look for an SKS. Are all those shots in post #17 from the same rifle? Weird how they circle around the bullseye! Surplus ammo? If you weigh it, I find better accuracy results, and if you have the means to pull the bullet and even out the powder, then you really start to see improvements...

The ammo is Barnaul non corrosive. The rifle shoots all over the place untill it warms up. The brake does work. It stays on target better but you do feel it in the shoulder more. No plans to reload for now. As for the mount, it is a Weaver "converta-mount" modifier to fit the receiver. Works awsome. I will post more pics of it later on. I am planing to thread the barrel and eliminate the adapter.

50 Yards

tighten your groups up even more,,,

your using a rear cover mounted scope so it will never hold a zero,,,

without a small modification,,

Remove the dust cover pin, bolt, carrier and spring. (pin will need to ground)

Replace the dust cover.

Do not drill the hole. but tap a 1/4-20 (or finer) hole all the way out the other side from right to left. THE DUST COVER MUST BE ON WHEN YOU DO THIS. Or the threads won't line up properly.

Screw in the 1/4-20 heat treated, button head. Cut it off close to flush. Take it off, trim it, blue the end.

Put it all back together and go sight her in.

This will insure your sight goes back into the exact same place after cleaning, and take all the play out of the cover.

The second thing you can do with surplus ammo is to reload them with equal amount of powder. Or as it is commonly called 'Mexican match ammo' there can be a variance of up to 6 grains of powder between 10rds. You will notice with the surplus powder the grains are of an uneven size/shape, but just evening out the load weights will improve surplus ammo,, no flyers.

If you look close, he's not using a receiver cover mount. It's a receiver side mount, and I doubt it's ever going to get solider than that. Also he's using commercial ammo, not surplus.

^Which makes the groups even more interesting...settling down after it warms up sounds like she likes being fouled, maybe?

...I'm going to have to post an SKS picture in this SKS picture thread so when y'all click on newest SKS picture post you can look at my SKS picture, even if my SKS pictured is a bone stock refurb.

My often used 1952 in it's older ATI stock and a pair of white lettered 1951's. All Tulas. The one with the black bayonet has been wiped down, but is still packed full of cosmoline on the inside. The kid will get it for her 12th birthday if she shows interest. Thinking of grabbing another to pack away just in case....

That to the far right is what I call the best damn SKS you can make today. I forgot the name of that stock but I don't think they sell it anymore, shame because it's the best no frills upgrade around. That stock gives you modern ergos along with other advantages yet doesn't stupid it up with useless crap like every other SKS tac'ed out stock. If that were an SKS-D in that stock, you'd really have the best damn thing around.

It's long since out of production so far as I know. There's a version with an M4 style adjustable butt that replaced it. Probably with a couple of rails on the front...

Nicest thing about that one is it really lightens up the gun. Makes it great for lugging in the bush.

Joshua13
12-29-2016, 11:05 PM
It's from addley precision
Pros:
mounted right to receiver never lose zero
Rugged
Can still use irons
3 rails in case you want a scope, red dot and flashlight.
Everything to install comes with and it's very simple.
Cons:
Optic centerline is quite high from barrel so you have to learn where your bullet travels.
Still kind of a pain to remove and install bolt. I've spent a number of hours on the couch just mucking with it

Overall worth the money, however I've now just found one called choate mount which might be slightly better

I've got a Promag side mount, which is very similar to the Choate one. Not bad, pretty solid but if I did it again I'd be awfully tempted to get one of the Wartack rails that span the rear sight to the receiver cover takedown pin. They seem solid enough and can fold out of the way for cleaning. Also about the lowest rail height you can get for an SKS.

Would a strap on cheek rest help with alignment?

IMO the wartac is the worst, I wouldn't buy it because
A) the empty shells bit it on ejection and damage it, over time it gets kinda bad.
B) Everytime you undo it to clean you can put the zero off
C) no BUIS

How is it for disassembly with the promag kit?

I wish it was easy to take off, lol. But you can get'er done.

Of note, you can modify the SKS receiver to make it eject more sideways and less up if there's a scope or rail issue. A pretty simple grind to square up the rear of the receiver opening, it's worth a google.

No need for that. Douse it in Windex (use brand name) before you load it back up into the truck and do a good cleaning at home. You will never have an issue.
I take it right apart and liberally spray everything. Bolt, chamber, barrel, gas tube, piston etc. I've shot at least 1000 rounds through mine and it's still shiny and ever. When I clean it though I do a really good job. I take out the firing pin and ejector from the bolt and everything.

Buy a 99 cent funnel from Canadian Tire, put the kettle on while you're unloading the car and empty the kettle through the barrel into the basement floor drain before pushing a G96 soaked patch through and stuffing it in the safe. Bolt and gas bits get a rinse in the laundry sink and wiped with the same G96, it really doesn't take long.

I keep some Barnaul FMJ on hand for when I'm short on time, I can still bang off a few rounds worry free, save the cheap stuff for days I have a little free time. I think I have three or four hundred rounds of the Barnaul kicking around still, I used to snag a couple boxes every payday when it was $7-$8 a box. The odd place still has it by the case, about as cheap as it gets for non corrosive 7.62x39.

Jesus, hasn't anyone taken chemistry? The reaction between water and steel is instant. Minimizing that contact by using boiling water does almost nothing as the heat will increase the size of the pores on the metal.

I cringe when I hear about M14s going in the dishwasher and people boiling water to use on thier sks.

Not to mention heat increases chemical activity. Besides, the salts deposited by the use of corrosive ammo dissolved extremely well in cold water which is why you need to clean them sooner rather that later.

I was looking at buying a rail for mine, but I'm kinda turned off at the mounting on the cover plate. I shoot corrosive ammo, so it would annoy the piss outta me to have to take it off every time I take the thing out. Not to mention throwing the scope off. Is the plate mounting repeatable enough that the scope stays semi-zeroed after cleaning the thing?

i don't know for you guys but i shoot mine with its original iron sights at 50yards and i get a 3 moa using
norinco non corrosive ammo on any day. my friend installed a scope on his and pretty much gets the same kind of groupings . my point being that the sks inherent accuracy isn't going to get much better with a scope.

i still have quite good eye sight though..

Nice walnut sporter stock, flush magazine, Chinese mismatch sks. All I need now is a sporter style rear site and maybe a side scope mount.

Got my 1952r Tula a few days ago, Tapco stock in olive drab. I have a Murray's firing pin on order, once it's installed I'll take it to the range.

Here's my 1951 Tula 'Light refurb' -
I bought this when the Canadian Long-gun Registry was stopped and Canadian Tire was selling these for $159 CDN in Nova Scotia. I think that was 2014. This is 'Light refurb' in that only the magazine (due to CAN 5-round restriction ) and stock (prob damaged) were replaced and forced numbered. All internal numbers match with action numbers. The repl stock has a very well done repair on the back left by the action but otherwise just re-numbered. I have a receiver mounted Barska 3-9 x40 Scope (Cabellas) which is see-thru for irons, too. I fitted the cover precisely and the scope holds Zero - for several hundred rounds now. I have the original receiver cover too. I'm using a notebook-case strap for a sling - HD nylon and adjustable, with a shoulder pad
All of the metal shows virtually NO wear, so I'm guessing this did not 'see action' anywhere unless the refurb extended to re-blueing everything. The CanTire guns were cleaned up and 'pinned' to 5-rounds so I don't know what condition it was in when the importer got it. That could be where the mag and stock were repl-d.
I put in an Mcarbo Sear spring (medium weight - the 'light' one lets the mag dump open) and polished the sear engagement surface and rails and the rails inside the trigger assy - really smooth trigger but still sorta heavy due to hammer spring. I don't want to go too light since this is a hunting gun as well as targets. Shoots very well with NO issues with Milsurp (Czech, Romanian & Chicom) and modern Barnaul ammo. The range I use only goes out to 200 yards so I can't tell how accurate I can shoot beyond that.
PICS DELETED - GUN SOLD !!
