I'm thinking it's time for a change so I've been shopping for a 3006 to "re invent" when it dawned on me that I have a Sako L61R in .270 collecting dust in the safe.
Now this should be as simple as a re barrel yes?

I'm wantin to go with the regular A Square 338-06 not the AI version so I can use 3006 brass and don't have to mess with the shoulder...

or am I missing something in my thought process..?

thoughts...
opinions...

anyone shoot one?

I should think it would be as easy as that.
I've been daydreaming about a .338 Federal off and on for a while, the 338-06 should give it just that extra little oomph.
Should be able to carry reasonable horsepower out a good ways.

As far as I can tell, it should be a simple barrel swap and you'd be good to go.

I'm not sure about the improved version of the .338-06. On the one hand, you should see an improvement in case life because the brass will stretch less and require trimming less often. On the other hand, once you get above .30 cal, the improved case doesn't really offer the same level of improvement as on the smaller calibers. If you're going to be going handloading only, it makes sense to go with the improved case.

If you weren't totally set on a .338-06, you could step up a little more to a .35 Whelen. Same case, bigger bullet.

However, and these are only my personal thoughts, being that it is a Sako, I'd probably rebarrel to 9.3x62, just to be different.

This all started after I sold my 338WM
I started thinking about another 338, specifically the 338Federal, but decided a long action with more powder capacity was a better idea...
The AI case only creates minimal performance gains so isn't a consideration
the 9.3 now there's an idea...Sako chambers it, or did...interesting round too...although I don't plan on going to Africa any time soon...or ever
the wheels are turning now lads...

The JOB is a Simple rebarrel & chamber job to any of the same head size cartridges - so pick what you want 338-06 - 35 Whelen - 9.3 x 62 - depening on your needs I would use the 338-06 or the 9.3 and bypass the 35 Whelen - its a KOOL name but its not as efficent as the 2 other cartridges ! JMHO :Beer time:

Brother may want to look at the "Hawk" series of wildcats including the .375 and the .411 Hawk, these were designed to get the most powder into a 30/06 case. I have no experience with these wildcats, but the idea is sound and a .411 bullet in the 30/06 interests me.

I like the looks of that .411Hawk...it reads to be a performer.

I would go wiith a 338-06 before the others.
Main reason is the availability of brass and projectiles.
Would I trade t in for my 338 win mag?Not a chance.
But if I didnt have the 338wm I would consier the 338/06
for a thumper.Should just be a barrel swap also is a good point.
