What are you using as a go-to hunting rifle and what's your target species?

I carry a Remington 700 SPS DM in 7mm Rem Mag and I mainly chase coyote, deer, elk, and moose. I've also dabbled in black bear hunting.

For most hunting, I take my Vanguard in .300 Weatherby. Leupold Rifleman scope on top makes it a fairly deadly budget combination. I've shot white tail, mule deer, coyotes and moose with this rifle. Hopefully an elk this fall.

The .300 magnums are a great round, if you use the right bullet. Standard soft points can explode at the volocities the magnums throw them at. Case in point, I had a Wnchester Power Point blow up on a neck shot at about 20 paces out of an '06. Even at that velocity (2700 fps'ish) the bullets can't hold together. At extended ranges sure, but then you'll need to stretch the range more with a .300 magnum. Now if you use a well constructed bullet, I'd think that .300 will out perform a .308 or .30-06 at all ranges plus you've got the extra peace of mind if you want to step up to a bigger critter at the same time. That's not to say you can't do it all with a .308 or a .30-06, but you do have the option if you so choose.

.300 Win Mag for deer????

Damn I must be crazy then with my Marlin XS7 in .243!!!

Topped off with a Bushnell 3200 3-9, it doubles as my Deer, and Coyote rifle.

That said around here it is shotgun only so this year I am planning on using the Stevens 350 w/ghost ring sights for that.

I've got that same rifle in 300 win mag, and there's nothing wrong with them. I had mine tweaked out enough with reloads that I was hitting 6" gongs at 700 meters about 70% of the time. For somebody with my coffee addiction, you can easily blame the misses on me. I only hunted with mine for 2 years, and both years, I dropped dear with them.

Doesn't really make a difference, I've never seen a live buck in the woods in my life, and I'm 52. Far as I'm concerned, the Quebec government pays pretend-hunters to drive around with bucks on top of their trucks in order to motivate fish like me to buy permits. I'm on to their sinister plan and fully intend to expose this fiasco in next weeks' national newspapers. :D

I had been looking for one of these for a very long time and finally found one this winter..... It's not the most accurate gun I have ever shot (regular sporter barrel) but it will do 1.5" groups all day at 100..... I love it for it's light weight and simple design.... I also love how everything on it is overbuilt , from the bolt release right down to the hinged floorplate assembly.... scoped with a 4-12 x 40 Vortex Diamonback it still weighs in at 7 pounds...

I HAD a Browning A-Bolt in .280 which I foolishly traded. I picked up a .44 Mag Puma Trapper for hunting bears which may or may not occur this year. Looking at picking up a .243 and something big(ish) like a 9.3 or a .375 . I also hunted briefly with a Parker Hale .308 last year but as some know deer hunting leads to heart ach for me most of the time.

My go to guns are My FN 270. (mauser action) for what ever large animal that needs to be put on a platter, and My browning Pump for whatever bird needs to do the same. However my browning pump has also seen action in muzzeloader/shotgun deer season and performs brilliantly with slugs.

Ok...I've changed my "go to" gun. This year, it's going to be my trusty old Winchester model 94 lever action in 30-30. I just picked up a smaller aperture for the receiver mounted Williams peep site I put on it a few years ago. Why the change in "go to" gun ? Why go to a 30-30 win shooting home cast bullets from a 300 win mag for longer range, wide open prairie hunting ?

Well....after much consideration and after looking at the results of past hunts, I decided I have to give my hunting buddies a chance to shoot their own deer this year. :) Flame proof suit on !!!!!! ROFL !!!!

It's not pinned. That one is 10rds, they also have one in 5rds.
The magazine is unique to that detachable magazine kit.
They sell the kit I bought below(for 308), ships from the states to Canada - no problem.
The factory floor plate is very nice in my opinion, but I like having a detachable magazine.
There are other kits on the website for different calibres.

Lots of nice rifles. This is my goto rig. It's stainless and synthetic for practical reasons, gets out a lot in all kinds of weather, hence the lack of prettiness setting in after years of use.

It started out as a Model 70 SS Classic in 7mmrm.

As it sits now it is a 338wm with a #4 sporter contour Pacnor SS super match grade barrel cut at 26". The action was blueprinted, and has a Williams spring steel extractor and bottom metal. The stock is a Macmillan Hunter. On top a Nightforce 2.5-10x32 scope on Nightforce rings.

It shoots as one would expect from this group of components - very well.

Tikka T3 Lite 30.06 Left Hand Bolt. Two things it needs before it goes out is a 5 round mag, and more importantly a scope. Havent decided what I want aside of it being at least 12X in power. Oh well I have time for that.

For now, if the need arises, I have these tried and true warhorses -

The infamous 'fencepost'. A wartime K98 action with a heavy .308 Win barrel in an old Fajen stock with an oil finish. This project started when my cousin's Mauser (South American of some sort) developed a serious headspace problem. In attempting to remove the barrel the receiver cracked and it was shelved. My uncle then came across this barrelled action, it was a target rifle until it suffered some muzzle damage, so it was shortened and re crowned. He then removed a whole pile of fore end from my cousins old stock and transferred the scope and mounts. I later swapped in the Elite 3200 it wears now. This gun took a whole pile of deer over about a five or six year period. It's been sitting idle in the safe for a bit, this year it's gonna see some coyotes and possibly wolf if I'm lucky...
Almost forgot why it's called the fence post....$&@% it's heavy....

I bought a Remington 7600 in 30-06 years ago, mostly to piss off my dad who believed God created Adam, Eve and the bolt action rifle and not necessarily in that order :)

It's been a pretty solid performer tho. It is FAST on the second shot, it's pretty accurate with the right ammo, it's nice to carry and it feeds into my love of pump action shotguns.

It's nuthin' pretty - it's not my dad's 700 in 300 weatherby or anything, but it's a lot of fun to hunt with and I've always liked it.

Still need to drop something with my Rolling Block 45-70...

I love to shoot my 45-70 but I'm worried about shooting anything with it with the 325gr it likes I'm thinking there will be nothing left but asshole and fur!

But it's a slow 325 grains....;) My guess is you'll 'eat right up to the hole' as they say. Big slow bullets seem to create a neater wound channel than small fast ones....at least from what I've seen....

I use a 350 grain bullet at Ruger number 1 loadings and hit a deer in the shoulder and it just made a hole and no blood shot meat hardly. Only thing it's blown up is gophers at a hundred yards.

Best hunting cartridge I used that caused the least amount of meat damage for either mule deer, black bear or moose was a 375 H&H handloaded with 300 grain Sierra spitzer. As is usually the case for large caliber, reasonable velocity loads, "eat right up to the hole". The only downside to the rifle was the weight, recoil and everything else was more than acceptable. Sorry I sold the rifle during a time of financial necessity :(

Foxer
03-12-2016, 04:22 PM
Yeah. Big and slow tends to actually do less damage than small and fast. You lose out a little on max range but when you CAN hit 'em you tend to do very little damage to the meat and all kinds of terminal damage to the animal. That's where we get the phrase 'eat right up to the hole' from.

Kills 'em dead - and you stay fed. :)

I shot a doe with a BRNO 602 in 375HH. Not a single step and the heart was in 2, nicely cleaved pieces. PITA to carry, though. I picked up a Model 70 in 270WSM (2nd hand) and it shoots like a dream. I'm looking forward to trying it out in the woods this fall. I topped it with a Nikon Monarch 3-12x42, plex.

The 257 Weatherby Vanguard in 'sporter' low gloss walnut trim. Picked up the rifle 40% off when WSS blew out all their remaining series one Vanguard stock a few years back. Paid more for the new Vortex Diamondback HP than I did the rifle..... Anyway, I traded away it's eyes almost two years back for a nice 6.5 Swede. Remedied the situation this week with a brand new 3-12x42, and got her torqued on tonight with the wife out of the house. This'll be the deer rig for November, the 35 Whelen can go back to moose duty ;).

With the air bottle.

Love the rifle, but in Canada its just to damn expensive to use it, its best to get a 4500 psi tank to fill it, and in Canada (my area) can't find a dive shop that fills tanks to 4500psi, its also hard to find a tank for less than $1000

Savage 11 Trophy Hunter XP in 22-250. Finally got it sighted in last weekend, though it still needs a little fine tuning at longer range. Shows potential though, three shot groups that can be covered by a quarter off a monopod with Federal blue box. The cheap Weaver will be headed down the road at some point in the future. It was a little better in low light than I expected, though it had the benefit of snow on the ground. The factory mounting and bore sighting was terrible though, crosshairs were quite out of square with the gun. By the time I straightened that out and brought it back 1/4" to help with the short eye relief it was right off the paper. Though the crooked crosshairs could explain all the reviews complaining this package is tough to sight in....

Anyway, I'm pretty happy so far, the scope was a bonus, got the package cheaper than I can buy any bare non Axis Savage for.

The 1:9 barrel spins the jackets right off of SPSX bullets over 3000fps but it likes 55gr FMJ for some reason...go figure.
Good choice btw kmo, Savage has always been a working man's rifle. This one sat in the lockup for a couple of years til I sold some junk and upgraded the glass on it. I have beaver issues so tomorrow we're gonna go see what one looks like in that new scope. ;D

My hunting rig depends in the conditions, game, season and regulations where I'm going to be hunting in. Just like you don't have just 1 fishing pole or just 1 golf club, we all need more rifles and shotguns :) to cover the different hunting opportunities available to us.

If I'm in heavy bush I'll be using my big bore Marlin 1895GBL 45-70 Gov c/w a Vortex Diamondback 1.75-5*32 (where allowed - max hunting caliber is 270 in my county).
Speer's .458 dia. 400 grain SPFN @ 2000 fps will kill anything I'm going ever going to be hunting :cool1:

If I'm in the open where a longer shot is the norm, I'll be using my Savage 300 Win Mag c/w Vortex Crossfire 3-9*40 V-Bite (where allowed - max hunting caliber is 270 in my county).
Loaded with Hornady 178gn VLDX, Nosler 200gn Partions or Hornady 212gn VLDX depending on game.
https://i.imgur.com/qMmPfHKl.jpg

or I'll be using my Savage 25-06 Rem c/w Vortex Crossfire 4-12*50 AO. Loaded with Sierra 90gn Blitzkings or 117gn SBT for ground hogs, deer, coyotes & steel.
https://i.imgur.com/FiQi0HJl.jpg

During the deer season in my county it's shotgun/muzzle loader only.
Khan Venacor 12 gauge Semi-Auto c/w a Bushnell 3-9*40 & Excalibur scope cover. Change out the choke and yr good to go for turkey.
https://i.imgur.com/LF5haekl.jpg
Thompson Centre 50 cal

There's additional deer hunting opportunities available before and after the rifle/shotgun seasons. During these times you will find me in the bush with one of my crossbows.
Excalibur Matrix 380 Xtra c/w Vortex Viper XBR 2.5-10*44. Loaded with a 285 gn Zombie's tipped with a 125 grain G5 Montec broadhead.
