    Remington Versa Max Tactical

Opinions? I'm thinking about getting one. Just because.

I have one but little experience with shotguns. My choice was based on what I read and there's a lot of opinion on line. I bought it for three gun and have it with me here in Texas. I got the 22 inch model which comes with most of the "tactical" toys. When I arrived here in Corpus Christi, I took the gun to the rather famous Benny Hill for his full "Spa treatment". Prior to that I increased the capacity to 10+1 by means of tube extensions in order to compete with the locals. Benny's work includes machining the loading port to remove the edges that can damage your fingers when doing fast reloads. He also replaced the loading mechanism with a "welded up" version that eliminates the fork that can mangle a thumb. He then machines and lightens the bolt and zeros the gun with slugs. All of that to say that the gun goes from excellent to super good. My gun is now what would be termed a "full race gun". For what it's worth, the VMT is very popular here among the better shooters. The other top choice is the Benelli M2 which Benny works up in essentially the same way. I'm happy, happy, happy!

PS. If you get the gun, don't buy ported chokes. They automatically put you in the open division. So even if your pistol and rifle are in the "lower" divisions, the shotgun will put you in open. I bought extended chokes by Trulock. They are expensive but easy to change out without tools.

Thanks for that beaming review! I, however, don't plan on doing any competitive shooting with it. Just shred some targets at the range and otherwise as a home defender.

It would do well in the home dense role but probably costs more than other very acceptable alternatives. I've tried it for VERY casual Skeet and had fun but you are really out of place in the clay sports that tend to be a bit "stuffY" for my tastes. Bringing your VMT to the line is sort of like taking your AR to church. However I love it for other targets including plates. It makes HUGE holes in paper that are very satisfying. Load up some full-load slugs and you might enjoy the thumping but can always retreat to light load target ammo.

I have so much fun shooting that it's hard for me to say what I like most. That's where 3Gun comes in. It's sinfully FUN.

I am on the fence too.
So hercster this is your new 3gun model?
Do you have any pic's of it?
What are your likes and dis-likes with the pointability and shootability of this rig?

I have a few close ups of work I had done by Benny Hill. One is of the machined bolt, another is the reworked lifter and machined loading port and the last is a two shot extension I bought that gives me 10+1.

I can't say anything negative about the gun. In terms of "pointing" it comes with adjustable stock plates that give you all sorts of options. I adjusted drop and cant until it pointed perfectly for me.

It's a soft shooter due to the gas system and a nice butt pad. You also get a raised comb if you need that for a good cheek weld. Just the fact that it's used by a lot of competitors means something to me. You can spend much more for a Benelli M4 and gain almost nothing as functionally they are close to clones. Even some parts are interchangeable with the Benelli.

I would say that the gun is very friendly to a new shooter myself included. The mods I had made were strictly to make it more friendly while doing fast reloads. Reloads are 60% of the game in competition shooting. The good shooters make it look so easy but there's lots of skills involved.

My credentials are very limited as I just started 3Gun last winter. Mind you I got into the shooting game at 65 and now five years later am still out there with the younger guys every week. What can I say? I love guns and really enjoy shooters' company. Texas is shooting heaven with facilities and organization that would make most Canucks drool. Every week I can shoot, IPSC/USPSA, Steel Challenge, Tactical Pistol, 3Gun, Shotgun, Carbine, IDPA and others if I want. My weekly matches are just $15 and we have about 40 shooters week after week.

If I sound mildly enthusiastic, it's because one of my clubs here in Corpus Christi has eight action bays while the other has fourteen or fifteen. Here is a video from the club where I shoot most weekends. If you watch long enough you will see Jerry Miculek and Benny Hill. That match is scheduled for Feb 16 this year and yours truly will be carrying the Canadian flag. I'm the only regular Canadian shooter and Hercster is known as "the summer Canadian here."

    Come on down Y'all :-)

    Wicked and love the vid.
I like how they enlarged the feed whole but why did they put serrations on your bolt for?

I thought I had answered this but something went wrong. The theory is that lightening the bolt reduces cycle time. For me it's irrelevant as I spend so much time with my classic wobble /stagger around the stages. Also reloading is such a huge factor. However it looks cool and there's nothing wrong with cool right? The top shooters can take advantage of small improvements because they are so fast on the trigger. I'm not good but I'm slow so it all boils down having fun with my toys.
