The girls here went on strike during that crappy weather over Remembrance Day, we haven’t had an egg since. Tomorrow morning their coop/run is going to be moved into its winter spot. Then next week I’ll hoard the whole thing in to keep them happy for the winter. And rig up the heated drum waterer so I can quit swapping frozen ones out every day. Work smarter not harder.

In all your spare time, could you snap a picture of your heated drum waterer?
We're just running a 5 gallon heated waterer for the winter, and my wife is getting cranky about filling it every day.

Sure, we just finished the move. It’s not thermally efficient yet. I’ve got a froth pack of polyurethane that I’ll eventually spray it with and then the plan is to coat that with spray on box liner to keep the birds from ruining it.

    I’ll grab some pictures tomorrow.

It’s just a threaded lid drum, with some nipples and a hole for the cord of a heater to pass through. Nothing fancy.

It works well for turkeys and chickens, ducks aren’t fond of it but it keeps them alive.

    Yup, got mine today too.

What are your plans for this year?

I’ll likely just get 10 turkeys, 25 Cornish and keep the layers that are here now.

Thanks for bumping this thread, I forgot to get tomorrow nights supper out.

I think we're going to try 10 turkeys this year, probably 50 cornish giants, and incubate some of our mixed breed eggs for new layers.
The western rustic meat birds we got last year were sure pretty, but there must be a reason everyone uses the cornish giants.

    New incubator this year.
    96 egg capacity.
It's half full now, and I hope to fill it between today and tomorrow's eggs.

And we ordered the store bought chicks this week too.
Plan to get them around the start of april, if available.
75 western rustic broilers, and 10 turkeys.
