Ontario Liberal candidate says party offered him 'job or appointment' not to run in byelection

SUDBURY, Ont. - The Ontario NDP is demanding an investigation after a former Ontario Liberal candidate in Sudbury said his party offered him a job or appointment to step down in the upcoming byelection.
Andrew Olivier told reporters he was asked to step aside so a "choice candidate" could be appointed or acclaimed.
Premier Kathleen Wynne denies he was offered anything to step away.
"There were no specific offers of anything," she told reporters Monday. "We were trying to pay Andrew the respect to know there was another candidate."
She added there will be more to add that in the days to come.
Olivier announced Monday that he wouldn't run, but that the difficult decision was his in the end, and he's not going quietly.
He said he met with major Liberal fundraiser and "king-maker" Gerry Lougheed Jr. last week, who told told him the party had someone else in mind to run for the Liberals, "and they wanted that person acclaimed without being challenged, and asked me to support their choice."

Olivier wouldn't reveal who the candidate of choice is, but he said Lougheed told him if he stepped aside and endorsed that candidate, "I should request to see what's in it for me - perhaps a job or an appointment."
He said he told Lougheed he had a job - as a mortgage specialist for Dominion Lending Centres - and he still intended to seek the nomination.
Olivier said he also received a phone call from the premier, and later talked to Pat Sorbara, Wynne's deputy chief of staff who was co-director of the Liberal election campaign in June, who "reiterated suggestions for a job or an appointment."
He said he was told Wynne would be prepared to "bypass the nomination process and appoint their candidate of choice" if he didn't step aside.
He took the weekend to consider his options, then decided he won't run, which is "why we are all here today," said Olivier. "Openness and transparency, sometimes sunlight is the best disinfectant and I need to shine the light on everyone for everyone."
NDP's Joe Cimino recently stepped down as MPP for the riding for personal reasons, sparking the byelection. Olivier was second choice by fewer than 1,000 votes in the fall election.
In a letter to the chief electoral officer, NDP house leader Gilles Bisson asked for an investigation into what he framed an "alleged bribery attempt."
"This is a serious allegation, and a conviction carries a penalty of $25,000 and prison term of two years less a day," he wrote.
"Ontarians deserve to know if this allegation is true, and if so, who ordered Mr. Lougheed and Ms. Sorbara to offer Mr. Olivier a 'job or appointment' in exchange for his withdrawal from the Liberal nomination race."
Former Sudbury mayor Marianne Matichuk was rumoured to have been the premier's choice, but she denied her involvement.
A call to Gerry Lougheed was not immediately returned.

All parties do it to a degree, but the libs (provincial or federal) tend to take it to whole new levels.
