Elcan may have introduced the most ideal AR15 scope ever made.

I just found out about this optic, the Elcan TR 1/3/9:

Armament Technology is very excited to introduce a first for the Shooting Sport and Professional - triple field of view rifle sight that continues on with ELCAN's tradition of leading optical performance and in the field ruggedness.

The SpecterTR is a 1/3/9x magnification scope giving any shooter the appropriate level of magnification required for any scenario on an AR style platform. The unique three field-of-view design maximizes combat effectiveness by providing precision close quarter, mid-range, and long range engagement capability. The SpecterTR™ rifle sight’s durability, versatility, and extra-long eye relief provides the user with an unmatched advantage on the battle field.

The 1x field-of-view provides a 16° viewing angle and an extremely fast, “both eyes open” target acquisition capability maximized by a red aiming dot and at least 70mm eye relief. The second field-of-view provides a 3x-magnified sight with a field–of-view of 6°, range compensating reticle, and precision mid-range marksmanship capability. In 9x, a crystal clear 2° viewing angle provides unmatched long-range target detection, identification, and engagement capability –all in a compact, lightweight 1264 mm, 829 g (scope and mount) telescopic package.

The magnification of the SpecterTR™ Tri-FOV weapon sight by ELCAN switches easily and quickly using a 3-position dial mounted on the side of the optical housing.

    Here's the specs: http://www.armament.com/specter-tr-139

I read here that MSRP will be over $3000.

One thing I am amazed about with the Army's Elcan C79 is that even though I normally need a light glasses prescription, I can through the optic and everything seems razor sharp without glasses at every distance.

There already is a perfect AR optic, by the way, it's called a Trijicon ACOG.

It's multi-use but far from perfect. Lots of complaints from the real world users about shitty eye relief, reticle washing out, fixed magnification, etc... You look up guys running G3G and in CQB stages a 1x red dot or holo is much faster.

With current technology it's always going to be a compromise. We want crystal clear red dots in a package as small and light as iron sights yet magnification ability of a scope. The Spectre DR is kind of like a red dot built into a 1-4x scope but it's massive, bulky and expensive as all hell.

The best multi-use objective on the market right now is probably the schmidt & bender short dot. An actual compact 1-8x scope that is also a red dot, captures the most light, best fov, etc... The capability to go to 8x then back down to no magnification with equal FOV of an ACOG is a distinct advantage. It's also much lighter in weight then any of the Elcan offerings. The catch? It's $3000+
