    PVS-14 Redux: Homebrew and Helmets

Since Shot Show I've been tinkering with a homebrew kit and revisiting the NV helmet concept.

Well, there's still a few small parts missing, but here's my baby:

Ops-Core Bump Helmet, with an Agilite Mohawk cover. Vlite, MS2000 (in a Kestrel pouch)

Finally got my eyes and ears to fit together on here. The behind the head Liberators were a huge pain in the ass. The suspension now sits above the ops-core dial, and they're essentially wired into the helmet. Not exactly QD, but I've spent years trying to get the damn things to work together so I'm pretty happy with that.

Regular Rhino gear and J-arm. In retrospect I wouldn't have painted the bars of the Rhino. Had to scrape a bunch of paint off to get the adjustment smooth again.

The PVS-14 is a homebrew kit, so no lens caps or rubber eye-foldy. It's an autogated Gen 3 Ekran tube in White Phosphor from Russia. When there's less snow on the ground I'll get some photos through the darn thing. PVS-14 body and lenses came from a Canadian military supplier.

Still waiting on my fleabay IR lens filter and an bushwacker flip up cap to zip a hole into. Trying to figure out which aperture diameter is best, unless I try a homebrew iris too...

The water polo ball is on loan.

    Expensive, and getting expensiver

You can get into a decent setup for around $2500.

But honestly, this is coming in at a lot more than that...

Could you elaborate on a $2500 setup?

Rule #1: Shop around! Some of my best deals on gear have come from ebay, equipment exchanges, and military surplus stores!

Rule #2: Have a plan. Do you want a helmet mounted monocular? Or a rifle scope? Or a long range system? Get an idea on what you want to do with your NVG, and don't lose sight of that.

Rule #3: Watch for the right device. Then suck it deep and buy the darn thing. For example, this is an amazing deal.

You certainly can. The people who run ITAR don't think you should.
