Police patrol rifle stolen in northwest Calgary

Police patrol rifle stolen in northwest Calgary car prowling

A Calgary Police Service patrol rifle was stolen from a vehicle parked in a northwest parking lot Saturday evening.

Police say an off-duty member was at a restaurant in the 0 to 100 block of Crowfoot Terrace N.W. and had parked his personal vehicle in the parking lot.

Inside the vehicle was a locked, hard-covered case containing a police-issue patrol rifle which the officer was taking home to clean and two magazines containing 28 rounds each.

When the officer returned to his vehicle, he discovered someone had broken into the vehicle and made off with the case and contents.

Investigators are looking for CCTV footage and trying to determine if other vehicles were targeted.

    More to come.

Sounds kind of strange , could the cop not clean the rifle at the police station , surely the Calgary Police Service can afford a rifle cleaning kit ; and why did the Officer need two loaded 28 round mags if he was just going to clean the rifle . Looks like some dead beat criminal scored him or herself a restricted C-8 , but it could happen to anybody , including me......I suspect there is alot more to this story than what the cops are saying at this point....

CBC is calling it a 'Patrol Rifle'

Police say an off-duty CPS member was eating dinner at a restaurant in the 0-100 block of Crowfoot Terrace N.W. when someone broke into his personal car.
The person took a locked case from the car, containing the officer's patrol rifle as well as two 28-round magazines. The officer had taken the rifle home to clean.
Investigators are canvassing the area for CCTV footage to determine if other vehicles were also targeted.

Well not very smart on the part of the cop.

    Taking it home to clean....

There is a comment that the officer is suspended with pay, something stinks here IMHO!

He followed the same rules as you and I. Sadly his vehicle was broken into. Could have happened to anyone here.

The fact that he had 2 loaded, prohibited magazines, changes the picture completely.

    Cheers!
