NIMBY's.....that's fine...shut down the site....but shut off their sewers, ban them from having outhouses as well....$10,000/day fines should encourage them to hold it in.

I actually don't have a problem with that, the people in the Okanagan should deal with their sewage at home. Trucking garbage and sewage for more than a few miles gets expensive fast.

Nanaimo city council just denied an application for a garbage incinerator that would've provided about a hundred high-paying jobs; I was greatly displeased.

But who need a job if you've got a Status Card?

If I lived in Merritt I would likely join the protestors. It is completely unreasonable to truck Kelowna's sewage sludge 100 and dump it in open air on the outskirts of Merritt. It is right and proper that citizens rise up against this kind of treatment br bureaucrats. It isn't only natives protesting.

I agree with this, for the first time in my life I think the indians are actually helping to do something worthwhile.
I'd rather make a difference than a dollar.

Ok - i know a little about this. Here's the REAL story.

First off - they don't really have a big problem with the sewage being dumped. Their problem is that there is a chemical IN the sewage used to treat it and cause it to break down which has been PROVEN to cause sterility in wildlife and cattle. Now - this chemical isn't a problem if it doesn't leech into the system, and the 'instructions' are that it's to be covered and protected from rain to prevent that and the company doing it does tarp it off - but the tarps frequently blow off and there's zero enforcement of that and the stuff IS getting into the water system. Plants will soak up the water, retain the chemcial and then cause trouble with wildlife or domestic animals who eat it (that area has a lot of 'free range' cattle).

They have met many times with the gov't, and proposed fairly sensible solutions - like use a different chemical, or enforce rigidly the requirement that it be tarped off properly all the time. THe gov't has basically told them to go piss up a rope. They have been open to any other ideas but the gov't has not been terribly responsive, saying that according to their research the chemical is safe (provided it's used properly). The people concerned are saying that's fine - but then you have to make sure it's properly sheltered and they're not. The gov't basically says that's not their problem.

After many meetings and many months, they are now considering this option. And it's not just the natives, although some native groups are trying to co-opt the cause to add in everything from land claims to opposition to bill c-51 into the mix. But the core people and first nations people of Merritt are only concerned about the effect of the chemical, and seeing as the gov't won't deal with that they're now taking the stand that it's unacceptable to dump there at all till this is resolved.

There's a lot of non-natives who are just as concerned in the area. Including some guys I know who'd normally happily get into a logging truck and run a first nations blockade just for the fun of it.

I'm not supportive of blocking any road at all - but I have to admit they DID go the proper route and the gov't is not addressing what are very valid concerns in this case. This isn't a case of 'oh what if there's some sort of problem with this we don't know about' - the chemical is KNOWN to be a problem if not used right and it's not being used right and the gov't doesn't want to enforce that.

If the gov'ts going to dump stuff there - they do have an obligation to do it right and then there's not a problem. These people aren't unreasonable. But they're about to BECOME unreasonable and then other 'professional protesters' get involved and it becomes a real mess. Christie Clark is totally making a pig's breakfast of this and there's no need for it.
