    Rear sight elevation help please

I put a Williams peep sight on my rifle and went out to the range to test fire today. Windage was great, but, it shot about 16" high, of course, I forgot to take a screwdriver to adjust. On the way home I was trying to remember if you need to lower the rear sight to lower the point of impact or raise it? I am thinking it need to go up at the rear to lower the poi. If it needs to go up, I am good to go if not I need to look at a new front post, in which case, do I need a taller front post to lower the poi or file down the insert to lower it?

rear sight is your friend, to lower the point of impact, lower the rear.
Peep sights usually end up requiring a taller(to lower the poi) front sight.

I have a Lyman target front sight so I need to make a new insert or buy a taller one it seems. Maybe I should stick to a scope.

Always move the rear sight in the direction you want the bullet to go.

Trying to do trig, if the target is at 100yrds, and the distance between sights is 22", then the front sight needs to be 1.15" taller

That can't be right? can it?

    Mmm 0.100"-ish?
    15" over 300 feet= xx over 2 feet
    300/2=150
    15"/150=0.1"
    I think. I can't really brain today.

And yes, move the rear sight the same direction you want the bullet to go.
Make sure to loosen the clamping screws before trying to adjust, too
Still feel silly about that one.

Well duh yea, for some reason I thought I did it in feet(aka brain fart) and times the 0.1 by 12 to get 1.15
So I did get 0.1 too, and then I proceeded to ruin the correct answer.

I like your math, because I found an insert for the front sight that is 1/10" inch higher. Given I have no downward adjustment on the rear and the good folks at Brownells told me this combo works, the 1/10" higher front insert maybe the ticket.

Found a set of weaver bases and put them in the range bag with some tools. My buddy is going to let me try his scope and rings. I installed the higher front sight insert and I will let you know how things go after the next range day.

Thank you folks, it all makes sense when I am given the answers.
