B-17 lands perfectly at an RAF airbase, does the whole pattern as well, comes to a full stop, but nobody is observed coming out of the bomber. Emergency crews climb aboard to find not one single person inside the air plane, no trace of any bodily fluid. What they do find are pilot logs, copies of radio transmissions. From the looks of it, the pilot stated that the plane was heavily damaged, the crew was badly hurt, but the plane itself was not damaged at all. Let alone, from what was seen, it was flying and landed itself!

    Quite a read.
I knew the Flying Fortress was quite a plane, but...

Supposedly one of the easiest handling bombers ever built. Crews that switched over to the B-24 Liberators felt the newer planes flew like a pallet of bricks.

The amount of damge the B-17 could absorb is just astounding.
Some of the pics of bombers that made it back with no tail left and holes big enough for guys to climb in and out of are amazing.

I recall a story of one plane suffering massive damage to the mid section, only a few struts were intact to keep the tail on, so they throttled back and the crew used their parachute cords to tie some of the main supports back together and made it back to England. The plane snapped in two after a successful emergency landing.

Lol, wasn't the P38 or P40 the inspiration for that one? The first American fighters with armour plate around the cabin, especially in the back of the seat IIRC. They gained infamy by causing Japanese Zeros to run out of 7.7mm. Apparently they were trained to gun for the pilot from behind. Also, air cooled with no rad to knock out and one of the first with an explosion proof fuel tank. They rolled into ground attack duty later on in Europe, then somewhere around the 1960's somebody started thinking 'why don't we just build a plane that's hard to shoot down again?'.

P47 is the plane you're thinking about.

The 24 was known as the 'baltimore whore' because its wings were so stubby for it's frame that just like a prostitute it had 'no visible means of support'
