Old Stevens favorite .22 Take Down

I picked up this little rifle a couple weeks ago. I finally got home and got examine it.
It has a few miles on it but overall it appears to be in decent shape.
When I tried to look through the barrel it was dark.
There was a bullet lodged in the bore about half way down the barrel.
I was able to remove it with a brass rod. I gave the bore a good cleaning.
    The rifling looks like new.

I cleaned and oiled the all the moving parts and made a trip to the range.
It functions properly and its accurate but it's hitting 8" high at 25 yards.
The home made rear aperture sight is too high. Perhaps it was made
    for .22 short rifle ammo.

There is no dovetail for a rear sight on the barrel. It may have had a receiver sight from new.
I'm sure the rear sight is home made. Can anyone tell me what it would have had for a rear sight
when it was new? If anyone has a decent butt plate please let me know.

    Terry

Neat. I've got one of the later ones made by Savage, not a takedown though. Really light, and a great shooter. Can't help you with the sight though, mine's dovetailed on the barrel...

There's 2-3 at the gun show, none in .22 unfortunately or I'd consider taking one home.
Can't recall the rear sight on them, if I remember I'll take a look tomorrow.

That peep sight is bubbas doing. I'm 100% on that... although this bubba looks to be fairly skilled and it wasn't a bad idea.
It should be dove tailed on the barrel for the rear sight... maybe he's plugged it?

Edit to add... could it have been rebarreled? Maybe it started off as a .25RF?
Or maybe adjusting the tension on the take down screw might have an effect on things?

I think I've only ever seen them dovetailed in the barrel.
It sure looks like a homemade sight, nicely done, but homemade.

I had the model 1889 in .32 long, it had dove tail sights on the barrel. But mine was a half octagon barrel.

Ok.... now I'm 100% that it's been rebarreled. It just don't look right. I don't think they were threaded on the breech like that.

I always thought it would be cool to convert one to .25ACP... Maybe it's just the 12.6 thing that I don't have but I've always fancied that caliber. Not what I'd be packing for SD but I think it's cool. Maybe a cool combo with a vest pocket browning.
I don't think it'd be that hard. Maybe poke at BSD....

I have the Browning also but it's a very poor rifle cartridge the 25 ACP . Have to check the measurements of the cases.
