Its popular in the military. Normally would get coined once you completed basic and in your unit. IE presenter would have a coin in his hand and give you a hand shake. Welcoming you to the group.
They can also be used as a thank you gift.

Why not? The goal of the coin is to show appreciation, and it's an easy way to show people who are less likely to be asshats to newcomers etc. And then we don't have to come over to this thread to check. Originally Posted by blacksmithden

coin # is inconsequential really. Anyone that notices the little coin could be directed to the ongoing thread. Would give other members something to shoot for if they so desire...
