    Advice on a new rifle...

    Hello from BC...

A noob here. Looking to buy my first (and last) rifle. Hoping some of you could help me out. Here's my criteria

    It must be:

    1. Non-restricted.
    2. Under $1700. 1800 max.
    3. 308 win or larger
    4. Semi automatic
    5. No SKS/norinco please.
    6. And here's the part some of you will laugh at but I'd like it to look like a tactical rifle... Laugh away but looks are important to me.

No offence to anyone with the above list. I can explain my reasoning for each. Anyhow - am I dreaming? Is this possible?

Here's what I REALLY like but it is a bolt action: Ruger Precision Rifle
This one looks really good too but crazy expensive: Modern Hunter

Any suggestions. My purchase will be in the next 6 months but can wait until May of next year.

You say no Norinco, but have you considered the M14 clone they make?

It's one of the few guns I regret selling.

You can dress these up in after market parts and you may be within budget.
It's a good budget too now prepare yourself for the sticker shock on glass.

Where in BC? How many rifles have you shot? Someone ought to take you out so you can get some experience.

My first thought as well! I have increased my horde by at least ten in the past two years!

These are pretty much your options given the criteria. There's also the 740 Remington and the Benelli R1, but both are generally only available in hunting trim. I've seen the Remington dressed up in tacticool, not the Benelli though.

One last thought, the Ruger Mini Thirty is out there if you'd forgo the .308 for 7.62x39.....

Your budget rules out an M1A and just about any non-restricted .308 that looks like one without being a Norinco. Lotta places don't carry SA Inc. stuff in stock due to the cost too. Shops have to pay for the stuff on the shelf whether it sells or not.
The Ruger Precision Rifle is a target rifle that has no sights at all. Runs $1599.99Cdn plus taxes at Cabela's Canada. Over your budget with taxes. That'll vary a bit according where you are.
Benelli R1's are too for the same reason. $1699.00 plus taxes with no sights.
However, do not discount buying used. Takes a great deal of abuse to damage a modern commercial rifle. Oh and look into an M1 Rifle.

If I may? What is your purpose intended with this rifle?
Looks aside, that list is very restrictive in Canada?
Offhand, to follow your wants to a "T", I can only think of the SVT-40...and I'm sure that's skirting your "no SKS" clause a little close for comfort. (Why no SKS?)
Non-restricted, .30 cal, cool looking = Big bucks. And the ammo bill tends to ramp up in a hurry, unless you can offset it with handloading or surplus.
