P-mags and Tavors: Stay Safe, and Fix em

So I went and bought a new P-mag to show the bolt-hold-open interference I've experienced in the past. Then did a quick easy fix with a multi-tool file. Its super short, but I personally recommend it to anyone shooting P-mags through a Tavor.

    Take a look:

P-mags can and do interact with the bolt-hold-open in a TAR-21! There's been some back and forth over whether or not this is possible. It is. You can see footage here. I realize the movement you see in this video is small, but its seems to explain previous problems.

What I believe happened to my rifle is this:
Shooting with standard p-mags caused my bolt hold open device to partially raise during operation, which in turn caused pre-mature wear on my bolt and bolt hold open.
This wear on the bolt may have been the source of some of the failure to feed jams, and bolt hold open failures I experienced at the start of the spring.
Since modifying my magazines and replacing my bolt, I have not had any further issues with the rifle.
The p-mag, e-mag, 20 rd p-mag all have the same rounded rear face. The new M3 magazine from magpul is specifically designed to address this issue in non AR-15 platforms like the SCAR and TAR-21.

Hopefully this video will help others from running into the same problems.

Thanks! I keep getting told "You have to make a dissassembly and cleaning video!" so I'll add that to this thread when I kick into gear and get that finished.

Would this compromise the durability of the magazine? I guess time will tell.

Cool, a Tavor thread! Tagged for interest, and potential marital dis-harmony down the road! Not that my wife can keep me from buying a rifle...don't tell my wife I said that 'K....

I doubt it, it's just slightly changing the shape of an already existing cutout...

I am far more comfortable compromising the durability of my $30 p-mags than I am with compromising the reliability of my $3000 rifle

Are third generation pmags also problematic or is this only on earlier generation pmags?

3rd gen pmags are some of my favourite polymer mags. Especially well riveted ones.

But do they also need to be filed a bit or do they fit properly and without damaging the bolt?
